i WILL have good streaming content! ๐ช๐ป๐
Added 2025-02-07 18:31:13 +0000 UTCAs you may or may not know; my live streams on the streaming channel are pretty much a Patreon perk. I usually don't particularly like doing it when I'm doing it, but I'm usually happy I did it when it's done.
You also may have noticed that it's been a technical disaster for a whopping 200 episodes now. ๐ But it's not for lack of effort!
What I really want to do is, at least twice a month, have streams that could be edited into the format of my older Benn And Gear videos, but with the added benefit of the community. Simple enough, right? All I need is an additional camera, a table, and some audio inputs.
Wrong.
Things I've tried that were...well...dumpster fires.
Atem Mini Pro
This was my first foray into multicam setups. Blackmagic Design went hard into creator-stuff during the pandemic and sent me one for free. It's absurdly powerful for the money, but the process of actually using it while streaming is a bit of a nightmare. A lot of the setting changes, even simple ones, require logging in via LAN, which is always a hit or miss. It's very Japanese, which should make sense to anyone who has worked for/with the likes of Yamaha or Kawaii. I promise I'm not being racist, it's just a different set of UI design principles. Maybe I am being racist.
Roland SR-20HD
I didn't expect amazing video features from Roland's video mixers, as they're typically made for worship and more formal streams. What I did expect was solid audio performance and quality. Welp. I've tried a whole lot of mixers in my day, from one-of-kind vintage Neve boards valued in real estate numbers to $20 mixers I got on Amazon Vine. And I'm pleased to announce that the Roland SR-20HD is the noisiest mixer I've ever used. It also doesn't output video directly to PC and would require running a 3rd party server to transcode to OBS. FFS!
Yolobox Pro
The Yolobox(es) are like thick Android tablets that are meant to do one thing: Stream video. They do a LOT and have loads of capture inputs and options. If you search for one, you'll find a bunch of YouTubers raving about how incredible they are. Late last year I took the bait, and while the box is alright. The features are legit, but the video animations and output can be choppy at times. The nightmare is the actual streaming part. If you want to use the majority of the features, you'll have to subscribe to YoloLive, which feels like a UI prototype where nothing seems to work as intended. What's worse, is you have to buy a license to try specific things that are included with the product (like network streaming protocols).
4th time is a charm!
I've ordered a MINISFORUM Venus UM790 Pro Mini PC with an AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS. That's a fancy way of saying "mini gaming PC". I've also ordered a multi HDMI capture card, and an Elgato Streamdeck Mini. All of the audio will run through a trusty old Mackie 1402 outputting into a simple line-in input.
The stream will be broadcast from OBS into Restream, which will send it to YouTube, Twitch, and maybe Kick or something. This should cost me something like $30/mo unless I find that Restream has one essential feature behind a $100/mo paywall or something (this is common for these services).
The idea, of course, is to spend a few minutes setting up, then be able to focus on the audio hardware device and audience rather than laying defeated on the floor covered in cables, which is how most of my previous hardware streams went.
I guess I just wanted to let y'all know how the streams are going, why they're not great, and what I'm going to try to do to make them great. They're basically THE Patreon perk when it comes to time and investment from me, and the goal is to pump out audio content on the side-channel, hire an editor, and keep it real with the music production stuff!
I will try #200 again. In the meantime, you can listen to me complain about streaming and talk about NAMM here:

I'm interested in ultrasonix, noise cancellation, beam forming and nearfield shennanigins. I like abstract beats, birdwhistles and ketamine. I'd like an interactive chair that can both comfort and exercise me without being impaled.

2025-09-11 13:52:03 +0000 UTCHello Benn, I just discovered your channel and am fascinated. I have been interested in voice signatures for a long time. That's why I follow the work of Thiker Thunker, who goes hunting in the woods with a microphone for unknown species that are not so easy to capture on camera. But nothing escapes a microphone. You would make a great team! check out -> https://www.patreon.com/c/ThinkerThunker/posts or https://www.youtube.com/@ThinkerThunker

2025-08-11 17:17:33 +0000 UTCi had a very good time streaming dj live streams (corona times) with macbook pro m1 max + obs + multiple iphones as camera. we had zero budget but our techno club in Hamburg needed donations. so i asked bar staff to lent me their iphones and for this they could stay at the club for the stream. it was rough sometimes, but iphones with obs camera app + obs was very straight forward and plug n play. in addition we sometimes used my zoom 8in 8out audio interface. the setup changed every weekend but was always mac + iphones + obs. maybe you're overkilling it with your streaming setup. use an old laptopn, install linux + obs and google how to use your two old android phones as camera :D ref: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_dtKxpqdDw

2025-02-16 20:28:24 +0000 UTCI added streaming to my video/audio/media support offerings at the start of the pandemic and have been through a couple of iterations of my streaming kit since. I recently added an Osee Duet streaming switcher (with dual direct stream feed on board) and LOVE it. Highly recommended for user interface, classic vision mixer operation, and dual SDI / HDMI connectivity. Worth looking into... https://www.amazon.com/GoStream-Streaming-Camera-Switcher-Updatable/dp/B0CBPBJK1V?crid=JGUD3BN2Q1XH&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.hnSRjsOvQ2VN6Xq9JEEcCt5BsaWgUlmaDZQGLP8ko3SrFg0SFSWaQKWCiQWbrFogNu8ADSUeLXVhOHevH60Pttn8EDpktdaXTweDmGKRjtJF2MCOWcFh3PVBYiEjNVEYwkxLf701T5FlfeajQAYVIQ.3yGpsh79u3M4aPPp-9vBnUrJDMlrmJgsr2PYNSWf_bY&dib_tag=se&keywords=osee%2Bgostream%2Bdeck&qid=1739040343&s=electronics&sprefix=osee%2Bgo%2Celectronics%2C106&sr=1-3&th=1 Also still available to assist with running your streams! I'm in your GA neighborhood! ๐

2025-02-08 18:55:51 +0000 UTCI have been having a problem since watching last nightโs mostly entertaining video. The comment about being racist (I know the intent, and understand it was not malicious) struck me at the time as being out of character. As I enjoyed my coffee and a few other videos this morning, my mind kept flipping back to that moment and I realized my discomfort stemmed from the mostly American normalizing of a colour and cultural based hierarchy in 2025. I know you mostly avoid politics and religion for good reason. Just hit me the wrong way and like you said in a previous video, sometimes you just need to say what you need to say. Thanks for the opportunity, and I have learned so much from you, so peace man.

2025-02-08 14:50:24 +0000 UTCBack when I used to occasionally help my friend out with her streams, she wound up having an easier time just using Steve Seguin's VDO.ninja to patch a smartphone or two into OBS for cameras B and C if she was flying solo without anyone playing tech director. Sometimes an iPad in the ninja room, too, as a remote monitor/switcher or as a controller for the companion API. A bit of a slapdash solution that definitely had its quirks, but it let her do fairly impromptu multicam throughout her apartment, it kept the show moving where more purpose-built bits of kit had previously ground her whole day to a halt and, as a bonus, it centered around some really solid FOSS from a mega dreamy, ASMR-voiced zaddy.

2025-02-08 10:31:48 +0000 UTCis the majority of the problems when you start switching video sources? is the audio stuff pretty worked out?

2025-02-08 03:21:19 +0000 UTCI'm just here to give additional support for your public YT content. Anything beyond that is a frosting on the cake.

2025-02-08 01:07:17 +0000 UTCfirst chick i met in the city worked at elgato. i was aware of the company as I was around the twitch scene years prior. she had no idea what any of the products did. i brought her back to my place and she saw my mattress on the floor and noped out. i bought a bed frame 3 days later

2025-02-07 19:58:21 +0000 UTCAlso look at vMix, it's a software switcher like OBS, or Tricaster. It operates more like Tricaster, ATEM, or other "professional" switchers, but has the near limitless flexibility that OBS offers. The newest version just increased the number of simultaneous stream targets from 4 to 6, though if you're bandwidth limited, Restream is still a better option for multi-casting. They also added a new "Telestrator" feature, which lets you draw over your video as an overlay. I use vMix 4k to livestream my church's services, 6 cameras (3 PTZ, 3 fixed cameras), with projection and lower-thirds via our projection software.

2025-02-07 19:16:29 +0000 UTCThe Venus thing has to work, and if somehow it doesn't I have Theory of who to blame. J/K As someone who has started doing some small time streaming on EMS I really appreciate how hard you work at these, and what a shit show getting any kind of complex setup happening can be.
