Fully hope Josh takes you up on this offer because I 100% agree

Nick Scott

Thanks bud I appreciate that. I agree, our childhoods do make a difference in the way we turn out but there are a variety of factors that make us who we are.

I feel for you, little nerdy Josh, not getting the sciencey things you wanted. Little Josh not getting his igneous or sedimentary rocks, or chemical set genuinely makes me feel bad. All the while, when I was little, I was getting encyclopedias and Lego Technic and sciencey stuff and never, ever going near it. I just liked watching Transformers and Ren and Stimpy, and football, and girls. What a waste, the way the world's resources are divvied up. I listen to a lot of science and philosophy podcasts nowadays, and the question of black students in STEM subjects often comes up, ie. why there are so few relatively speaking. Well, your story explains it pretty well - because the system holds them back, and hereditary wealth accumulates and reinforces upper class(generally white) privilege over generations while denying working class families any opportunity to do the same. You can be upper class, have huge amounts of money, invest that money in making your kids even more financially privileged, and your genetic oligarchy will keep growing in privilege over the decades and centuries. And you can be working class, and work twice as hard, and your kids end up poorer than you were. What chance are you going to have if you're in a school system as bad as you say yours was, and if your parents work day and night and still can't afford stuff, all because the same system did the same to them when they were kids. This stuff shouldn't be down to pure luck. I get the good luck to be a bit better off(not that my mum was ever wealthy - the opposite - but my dad had money so he contributed occasionally, from afar) and you have the bad luck to be less well off, and as a result a whole bunch of avenues are cut off to you, even though you genuinely love them and would obviously enjoy them and thrive in studying them. And there was me sulking through chemistry and setting things on fire with the bunsen burners, bored out of my mind. It makes no sense. Surprisingly, I became fascinated by science as I got into my twenties, ended up reading everything I could find about physics and cosmology and evolution(and that spun me off into politics and philosophy), but as a kid, or even a teenager, you couldn't have paid me to touch a chemistry set and I really hated all the sciences at school. We could've swapped places, and I'd probably have fit in better at your school and you at mine. At least, I was never going to put any effort in at school, all I did was piss about, so it wouldn't have made any difference where I was, whereas with you it probably would've made a huge difference(not that I'm saying you're doing badly now - obviously it's the opposite, with a 100k subs on YT and lots of followers on Patreon. I'm just making a general point.). The pure luck of it all is what gets to me. You're born lucky enough to be happy, you're born unlucky enough to be depressive; you're born lucky enough to have parents who love you, or unlucky enough to have ones who don't care about you; you're born lucky enough to have confidence in abundance, or unlucky enough to be cripplingly shy and awkward, lucky enough to be beautiful, unlucky enough to be a hideous gargoyle. Lucky enough to be clever, unlucky enough to be dim. It's a roll of the dice everywhere you look. So we should at least try and even the odds in those places we actually can even the odds. Nothing you can do about the luck of being born with the wrong brain chemistry, or the wrong parents, an unfortunate face, but the bad luck of being born into a crap school system is well within our control and shouldn't exist.

Saul

I hate to be that person but this show is a million times better with the original soundtrack, they have it in the Channel 4 player thingy and I have an ad free account if you’d like to use it once a week?

Violet Linnington

Apparently, I look 👀 like Howard and he is probably 1 of the best character of Fresh Meat. 🙄

Matthew Towner
