It's that really dry, deadpan style that People Just Do Nothing had too. Similar feel. Can be a bit cold and unengaging as comedy but I thought this was proper funny.

Saul

Oi'm a bit late oi know.

Saul

Agree that he's clearly a lot like Gareth Keenan superficially. He's got the same accent, the same vocal pitch, a lot of the same vocal mannerisms, little pauses. IDK what his character is like over the span of the show, it's too early, but he seems a lot angrier and more temperamental. So maybe not much like him in terms of personality. But he seems very similar in a lot of obvious ways. I really liked it. It's dry as the desert, a bit like People Just Do Nothing, just deader than deadpan. And that's not everyone's cup of tea. But it made me laugh a lot throughout. Green Wing will get in eventually.

Saul

This was so funny. Really brilliantly funny. Very impressed. Kurtan instinctively seems so much like Gareth Keenan, not just the hair, the face, but the voice, the accent, the mannerisms. And Daisy is brliliant.

Saul

'You're this close to me dropping you right now son!' is one of my favourite lines in the entire show πŸ˜‚πŸ€£

Holy smokes!! So I had heard of this show, but always assumed it was a northern comedy, but decided to watch this with you and after finding out it is in the Cotswolds, I googled and found out it is filmed less than 30 minutes drive from my house!! Ok, I need to binge this show now, this was great! :D

VEGGIE GAMER

The guy who had cancer really did he died they wrote it in to the show they were friends

mav

Look at like this: Kurtain to McKenzie is like Stewie to Mayall.

danny gibson

Kurtin is her actual brother in real life, her dad in the show is her actual dad and len is her uncle

BR90s

Love the Nationwide football shirt. The great days of Swindon :)

Kiwi Tau

This is class not seen it in a while so be good to rewatch with added Josh lol

I thought he acted like him a lot as well, given though its a classic character now so prob influenced by, i thought the mannerisms were very similar, could be a country thing though

Dave P

The only way he’s really like Gareth is that he looks a bit like him

Kieran B

Haven't watched This Country yet so happy to give it a go. But I live for the day Green Wing gets in lol

Balkyne

Can people not have opinions John? get a grip fella, i said it was ok just not laugh out loud funny, if you cant decipher comments just scroll on ffs

Dave P

Really good start, I'm looking forward to watching this. Yeah Josh, Midsomer Murders is a detective show set in a rural area with about 20 people living there yet somehow there have been hundreds of murders over the years 😁

BelladonnicHazeyJaneII

Oh no, you only kinda enjoyed it? I guess we'll have to change shows just for you

John

Haven't watched this before but really enjoyed the first episode! Heard good things and I love the vibe of the show, excited to join you on this journey

Michael Harrop

I kinda enjoyed it but theres only really a few laugh out loud moments in the whole thing, the boy seems like a total Gareth from the office clone so not really orig. Would have preferred something like green wing, at least there arent many episodes of this

Dave P

So glad This Country won. Next episode is too funny. I love all the 2nd episodes on each series. Kerry and Kurtain are brother and sister in real life, and Kerry's Dad is their Dad and Len is their Uncle too.

Lz Bristol

It's a bit short on serious belly laughs and more of a gentle comedy but that seems to be the norm with more modern comedy shows but I quite enjoyed it and liked the characters so I'll persevere.

BigChanChan

Romesh Ranganathan did a great short interview with them both here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-eH2aGQnrA

Kieran B

They're meant to be in their early 20s. Of course like many British shows this was written by Daisy and Charlie (who are brother and sister in real life). I grew up in the country - albeit quite a bit further north and it was a lot like this

Kieran B

So, so glad this won the poll! Superb reaction, Josh, and I just know you're going to fall in love with this show! I grew up in the Cotswolds and I can assure that the observations and characterisation in This Country is absolutely spot on! I get both disturbed and strangely nostalgic watching it. πŸ˜‚ "I've got enemies in South Cerney, I've got enemies in North Cerney, I've got enemies in Cerney Wick..." Bourton on the Water, Quenington. Know all of these places very well indeed! Beautiful Cotswold villages, absolute rural chaos... πŸ˜‚ .... or certainly was when I was growing up. πŸ˜› Bourton is a tourist destination that has gone crazy; it was popular when I was a child but it's bus tour central these days. They never name the village This Country is filmed/set in but it's Northleach in Gloucestershire. My old stomping ground. It makes me almost dewy-eyed. πŸ˜₯πŸ˜› Sluggs is played by Michael Sleggs who I knew (more of an acquaintance than a friend) but a lovely bloke who did die very young, at the age of 33. RIP Michael. I can't wait to watch this series in its entirety with you Josh! I know it's a bit predictable to say it, but it really does get better as it goes along. You will genuinely love it more and more with every week. I am not actually sure how old Kerry and Kurtan are supposed to be but a fair bit younger than the actors who play them I think. Daisy was 31 in this first series and Charlie 28, I think. They're not supposed to be teens or anything; early 20s I imagine but lacking the maturity of a less green early 20-something due to a very closed off rural existence. πŸ˜›

Ash Jeffries

this country, toast and fresh meat is a great rotation on at the moment!

Nathan

havent watched this since it came out its a great show excited to see your reaction to the rest of it!

Nathan

I've never really fancied it, but I was wrong, it was excellent, very funny, and I love the two main characters, the humour is very earthy, and very real. I loved the Dalek scarecrow. A very funny start, 8/10.
