There are parts of it that I just can't imagine being written; they must have been at least partly improvised because the interplay is so reactive and quick and happens between four or five people all talking over one another. Miles Jupp was utterly brilliant in this. What a great guest. I didn't watch this at the time of its broadcast, although I think I've seen all these episodes at some point just via repeats and occasional family watchathons at christmas and easter. But watching it all as it was broadcast, in sequence - it's really extraordinarily good. The total chaos of the political world is depicted perfectly, the skills Malcolm and the rest of them need to roll with the punches as things change every few minutes, the way the plot twists and bends in insane yet completely realistic ways, all while these quite rich characters deliver all this brilliant dialogue throughout...it's a high-wire act. And the 'nano-kettle'.
