i enjoyed this , i don't see the big deal about it though , hell... if you picked a random person from the street and said and proved to me that they would die if i didn't do that , id totally do it to save a life , as disgusting and demoralizing as it is your saving a life... , its not like he had to r word someone or do something truly evil , big deal he banged a pig , the wife is some sort of moron as well for not letting that go , id be proud to save a life not matter the cost (as long as it not equivalent or over the initial act that was said to be done to her/him itself) maybe i value life too much haha , naaa jk life is precious 🕊️😀

TheHigh

I would have just let her die.

You should watch Utopia (the UK version from 2013) it's really amazing.

Never watched this show before, heard a lot of good things. Not really into shock jock TV myself. It has it's place. I am interested in 'some' opinions above that it's not meant to have a message. The very idea, that a writer can write something as twisted as this without any form of their personal opinions or social commentary leaking onto the page. An odd blanked-faced way of looking at it in my book. Carry on thinking on all levels Josh. The artist's intentions or meaning of their work? (Twisted dude I'll agree.) My own partial thoughts or possible take: Power doesn't really rest in the politicians hands but societies. Look what I made you do, look what public opinion made you do. Don't forget where the true power of democracy lies. The nature of power who has it, who uses it, and how we waste that collective strength in repeating the same cycle. In some ways, the elected official was forced into protecting the future perception of his political party as much as a revered princess. Can it be a coincidence that the two chosen were a member of the government and a member of the monarchy.

Daryl

White Bear is my favourite episode too!!! Without giving anything away I cannot wait for Josh to see it.

Austin Stratton

Josh, I think the brain swap thing you're remembering is when you reacted to clips from this show titled something like 'Karl Pilkington predicted Black Mirror' about Karl's own film idea where Clive Warren's brain was put in Rebecca Demornay's head and she became a lesbian with the woman he was having an affair with 😁 Shredded Wheat.

BelladonnicHazeyJaneII

Yes, he almost managed to wrest some kind of dignity out of it, by soldiering on, demonstrating a stiff upper…lip… That might be why his polling figures end up improving afterwards. I’d respect a pm who did that - I think. And David Cameron doesn’t count.

Saul

(This was meant to reply to Brett, above)

Saul

The great thing about Black Mirror is that many of the episodes have more than one point. There are plenty of things to take from this episode. For me it was how people were pushing him to do it and when they witnessed the reality they realised how awful it was and felt disgusted. They went from jeering to feeling sick and wishing they hadn't seen it. This is emphasised by the people who gathered to watch deciding to look away when it started and then the nurse asks the guy to turn it off.

Michael K

I don't find it particularly morally outrageous, I just find it a crass and unsubtle conceptual piece. And sure, people piss money away all the time, but this was a particularly egregious example that was filmed for media consumption and exhibited as an artwork, all in service of an artistic gesture that even the KLF couldn't actually explain. As conceptual art it's just bad, and as some kind of gesture or statement it's confused. And ethically it's just wastefully stupid. Saying that other people are even more wasteful doesn't mitigate it for me.

Saul

The whole moral outrage over KLF is ridiculous, to be honest. People don't seem to realise that a million Pounds is a proverbial drop in the bucket, in terms of charity. It really wouldn't have had any kind of significant or long lasting impact upon anything. For example, Cancer Research takes in around £450 million each year. You really think that an additional million was going to make all the difference? Besides, the very same people who were outraged by KLF burning £1 million are probably the very same people who queue up to buy a lottery ticket every week (which is a massive waste of money, considering the literal fact that one is much more likely to be struck by lightning than winning the lottery). If every single person who purchased a lottery ticket each week, instead gave that pound to charity, then charities would receive millions of extra Pounds, every single week, in perpetuity.

Right Said Brett

You might not have heard about this Josh but there was a one-hit wonder dance music group called the KLF in the late-eighties/early-nineties which was made up of a duo of 'situational conceptual artists'(ie. wankers) who, after making quite a bit of money with a couple of megahits, declared to the press that they were going to make a 'major artistic statement' So in 1994 they went to a small Scottish island and proceeded to film themselves burning a million pounds in fifty pound bank notes. Which is equivalent to around £2.2m in current rates. The world of conceptual art is difficult to explain and even harder to justify. I remember being in art school and hearing people talk about what an incredible piece of situational art 9/11 was. Almost anything can be art in that world, it has nothing to do with actual skill(skill is looked down upon) and everything to do with the grandness and provocativeness of the concept. So the ending made sense - that conceptual art critics would be describing it as a brilliant and provocative piece of art when in reality all that happened was someone was forced to f**k a pig on telly. Conceptual art can be really good btw, but I admit that when it's bad it's very easy to take the piss out of it. And the KLF burning a million quid...it's pretty rancid, and in terms of stupidity and amorality it's up there with forcing the PM to do the nasty with Porky if you think about how much good that million could've done.

Saul

I thought it was really well done, said some interesting things about society and social media, it was well-written and brilliantly acted(Rory Kinnear was great) and I hated it. It was just grim, cynical and stressful throughout, without any dark humour to relieve the viewer. The dark humour was all in the premise. But this was the one I was looking forward to least of all, because I'd already seen portions of it, and knew what was coming(as it were). I'm still looking forward to this as I love Brooker and I love sci-fi. Hope the next one's slightly less relentlessly bleak though.

Saul

It occured to me while rewatching with Josh that this episode doesn't really fit with the rest of the show. There's no futuristic technology in this episode which is the crux of every other episode. I still enjoyed this episode though.

Sam

This isn't my favourite episode but it was better than I remember. It kind of sets the tone but I find this one a bit more in your face and surface level outrageous than many of the superb episodes to come which are far more psychologically disturbing and thought-provoking. It's a decent episode though! Great reaction Josh!

Ash Jeffries

A lot of people say this is a bad episode to start with because it's not generally well liked, but I actually enjoy this one. As it happens I started with season 2 episode 2 because a friend recommended it. I didn't notice that Black Mirror had won a poll, that's nice!

Josh

I think the point it makes is that politicians are willing to sell their soul (or f*ck a pig!) for popularity. That and a caution against social-media fuelled mob mentality.

jon d

"Cautionary tales about technology" is the main theme of the show. The title, 'Black Mirror' comes from all the screens that dominate modern life. When switched off, you can see yourself reflected, like a black mirror!

David Lyons

Well that was grim, lol. I’ve only seen two episodes of this show, not sure what it was called but it was about people being able to access memories, cool idea, and one called White Bear which was one of the best episodes of a tv show I’ve seen. Charlie Brooker is a very talented writer and a funny guy, his shows like the Screen/Weekly/Yearly Wipes, Dead Set, 10 O’Clock Live, Cunk On Britain and his one off specials… all great and very funny. He was even a writer on Brass Eye too. Although this episode was well made and acted I’m glad it’s out of the way, I also had it spoiled for me way back and so it wasn’t something i felt i really needed to see.

Will watch this after work tonight 👍 Really just looking forward to Thursday though 😊

LOL it was so gross.

LOL this episode was wild, I am anxious to see what else is in store.

After Work Reactions

This is just the tip of the iceberg as far as Black Mirror is concerned. A pretty fun episode. Would have been great if Malcolm Tucker had shown up to call the PM an Omnishambles.

Spooony

It's going to be a wild ride rewatching these. Most episodes are gold. Your reaction to this being the pig episode genuinely made me laugh out loud at 2am this morning :D

James Aston

Black mirror in general is about our relationship with technology, primarily the dangers posed and how it interacts and changes our culture. Most episodes are set in the near future and focus around exaggerated versions of popular technologies and how they may get out of hand if left unchecked, or how they are already being abused. Each episode is stand alone, but it's worth keeping an eye out for Easter eggs scattered throughout different episodes (EG the fictional news channel). Not all episodes are as dark, but from memory, almost all focus on more negative elements.

Eddy

I read that BM was put on Netflix with the seasons in reverse order, so people wouldn't be put off by this episode.

Keith Pratt

4 years after this episode aired, it was revealed that former British Prime Minister David Cameron had stuck his dick in a dead pig's head, whilst at University. Life imitating at, as they say!

Right Said Brett

Great reaction Josh. I'm glad you enjoyed this episode and rest assured that the next episode is very different, not a pig in sight, and also includes an actor you will recognise.

Sam

There were no subtitles?

Austin Stratton

Is there any particular reason why you had the subtitles on, Josh?

Right Said Brett

Real pity that Josh had this episode spoiled for him by a friend showing him a clip.

Right Said Brett

Josh 'I saw one clip.. guy having sex with a pig or something..?' Me.. oh.. lol get ready!!
