That was like Acorn Antiques on steroids LOL

Andy Farmer

Black Dynamite looks shit and I will absolutely be watching it, thanks for the recommendation.

Z is for Zed

Now there's another show that's aged well

Saul

LOL I do love the cheese in this show so far.

After Work Reactions

yessssss

Heard of this show, and tried watching it around the time IT Crowd was big, but couldn't get into it. Being much older, and much more conscious of cinematography and TV/Film tropes now, I absolutely loved this. I get the impression you get a bigger kick out of this if you have an understanding/awareness of that side of things, as it's very meta with that sort of stuff. The fact all the dialogue sounds AD'd, the horrible continuity errors, the VERY cheesy 70s and 80s style, little things like the camera zooming into the window but having to adjust slightly because it's gone to the one just above, etc. As much of the humour is in that stuff as it is in the intentionally poor acting and clunky dialogue. It's kinda nuts to have a show that relies so much on stuff that isn't the script.

Relyx

I love the fact they use AD too to make it sound extra janky and mismatched. All the dialogue subsequently sounds like they're a millimetre from the microphone and completely unnatural.

Relyx

We need some Nathan Barley.

Dannythedoodle

No, it's not laugh out loud funny, that's why it bounced off me first time around. It'd been quite hyped for a while with a lot of C4 promos, so I was expecting a lot. And it was really clever but it didn't make me laugh much. But I think you appreciate a wider variety of comedy as you get older and lots of things I now appreciate would've passed me by completely back then, eg. Ayoade's constant looks at the camera, which is threaded through with him being shoehorned in to the production because he's a mate or something, even though he can't act, and Matt Berry's preposterous Berry-isms, the 'buddies' line, etc. Back then I just wanted something that made me laugh as hard as The Simpsons but now I like things that operate on different parameters than just 'did it make me lie on the floor gasping for breath'.

Saul

It really is great.

After Work Reactions

Oh no lol That movie is so goofy and hilarious.

After Work Reactions

LOL I will have to check out the book once I finish the show.

After Work Reactions

LOL for sure the same vibe/ feeling for this show.

After Work Reactions

LOL =]

After Work Reactions

I am really excited for this show, it has been recommended since the beginning. LOL that scene was hilarious. It is a hilarious movie. Oh no lol I have heard it from a few movies and I have heard Tay call taking a fast shower a whore bath lol.

After Work Reactions

Thanks bud I am excited for this one, I have been waiting for it to win for a while. LOL I will have to check that out as well.

After Work Reactions

This was absolutely bonkers lol... I have a feeling it won't be laugh out loud like so many other shows that get voted in for their whackiness over genuine humour as this one was but it kept ticking over and I enjoyed it... Josh seemed to like it too which is important.

BigChanChan

Thanks bud I have been really excited for this show. I really enjoyed it and it is an interesting show lol.

After Work Reactions

LOL thanks bud.

After Work Reactions

Thanks bud I am excited for this show =]

When trying to get other reactors to watch it, I've often described it as a mixture between St. Elsewhere and the Twilight Zone. XD

Tony Mingoia

This one always reminded me of those terrible daytime over the top tv soap operas like st elsewhere etc. crazy with mad continuity errors and insane plots. Funny as.

Ferris Booyaa

He made some intriguing films. Never saw sightseers but watched kill list(?). he seemed to then disappear up his arse a bit.

Saul

So glad you enjoyed this, there really wasn’t anything quite like it when it came out. It’s wasn’t a hit at the time but it became a cult classic. I discovered it while working nights on my break time, i was reading the news on the tv, teletext it was called I’m not sure if that was a thing in the US?, so i couldn’t see the show while teletext was on but i could hear it in the background. It was the funeral scene and i was like what the hell is this show I’m hearing lol. Richard Ayoade and his shotgun, often looking at the camera has me in stitches laughing every time. It’s become one of my most rewatched shows and the dvd is a must have with some awesome extras. It’s just genius, the creator Matthew Holness (Garth) is brilliant, it introduced Ayoade and Matt Berry to me. I love everything about it, great music too. Also i agree, Black Dynamite is a fantastic film.

James Ellison

I’ve listened to the audiobook, it’s insane but very funny. I wish they made more episodes but maybe too much time has passed, i think it’ll be hard to capture that magic again.

James Ellison

I'm sure I read in an interview that Matt actually dubbed over his own lines here to give it that low budget B-movie feel. A touch of genius I think.

Tony Mingoia

Yeah, I quite liked the Mighty Boosh at first, but it does feel like it should only have been one season. Coming entirely from a place where Noel and Julian's already niche senses of humour overlap, it was always going to be esoteric, and wear thin pretty quickly. With hindsight it seems more like something they should've done at parties to entertain friends than a fully fledged TV show. BBC Three trying a bit too hard to push the envelope of new comedy I think. I don't think Josh would like it, certainly not enough to watch the whole thing.

Tony Mingoia

Alice Lowe was in Hot Fuzz, Inside No 9 - Seance Time and the great Horror Comedy film -Sightseers ( directed by Ben Wheatley)

William Burnham

I'm so glad you've gotten around to this, I can't get enough of it. There's a kind of spin-off 6 episode series called "Man To Man with Dean Learner", a pseudo chatshow with Dean Learner as the host, which is good stuff too. One of the episodes features Garth Mahrenghi as the guest. I've never seen Black Dynamite... But after watching that clip I've definitely got to check that out!

Stephen

The lord moves in mysterious ways.....sometimes he comes in at an angle.

Jeremy O Dwyer

Great start! I'm really looking forward to experiencing this show for the first time along with you Josh :D that 'are you alright?' after he exploded cracked me up. Thanks for including that clip of Black Dynamite at the end 😂 I was going to look it up afterwards. Never heard 'whore bath' before lol.

BelladonnicHazeyJaneII

Not sure whether you recognised Matthew Holness (Garth Marenghi), he played the divorce lawyer who shacks up with Warwick's ex-wife in Life's Too Short (and had a cameo in the very first episode of Friday Night Dinner as the guy who goes round to buy the sofa). Obviously Ayoade and Berry you know well, and Alice Lowe has written and starred in some wonderfully dark comedy stuff of her own. When you add the likes of Julian Barratt (Mighty Boosh), plus Noel Fielding, Stephen Merchant and Graham Linehan in future episodes, the sheer concentration of comedy talent in this series is phenomenal. And the attention to detail, too; tiny things like the wind blowing a gravestone back and forth in the scene after the funeral shootout! Been working my way through the new book, Garth Marenghi's Terrortome, and it chills the blood. Never before in the history of literature has anyone dared to wonder what dark forces can erupt when an award-winning horror author has sex with his own typewriter: "The hellish visions inside Nick Steen's head are unleashed for real. Forced to fight his escaping imagination - now leaking out of his own brain - Nick must defend the town of Stalkford from his own fictional horrors, including avascular-necrosis-obsessed serial killer Nelson Strain and Nick's dreaded throppelganger, the Dark Third. Can he and Roz, his frequently incorrect female editor, hunt down these incarnate denizens of Nick's rampaging imaginata before they destroy Stalkford, outer Stalkford and possibly slightly further? CAN A BRAIN LEAK? (Yes, it can.)"

Ian Richards

DYNAMITE!

Darrell Pringle

Great episode! And yes Black Dynamite is a great comparison; same sort of thing!

ALW

Nearly 20 years after this show, Garth Marenghi is doing a tour this summer to promote his new book. As it happens, the same day he is in Dublin my cousin is getting married, so I had a tough decision to make. But I decided to put my heart first and go with what is most important in life. Which reminds me, does anyone know a good place in Dublin to park your car?

Devyn Hall

Very underrated series, but glad it's gone on to gain cult classic status. This is one of those things where you spot extra details each time you watch it. (This time I noticed that despite claiming all the music was originally whistled by Garth, one of the first things you hear during the premonition is a ripoff of Psycho and The Twilight Zone!) I've seen it half a dozen times and until you mentioned it, for some reason I never questioned why a shovel was in the bedroom! This was also the first thing I saw Matt Berry in and since I didn't know what he sounded like, I was always trying to work out whether or not his voice was dubbed by somebody else! Oh, and I love learning new slang from you, Josh, so I'm filing away "whore bath" next to "DJ diddles" 🤣

David Lyons

It's so difficult to make a good show look so bad... if you know what I mean. But that's the beauty of Darkplace. All the continuity errors, voiceovers, plot holes etc - could easily have been a disaster with a less talented cast but they pull it off so well. More people are beginning to realise why it's such a cult classic now :)

Joe Gardiner

Black Dynamite is genius.

Regular Viewer Bunty Hoven

I just watched a clip from Black Dynamite the other day - the scene where Black Dynamite talks about the 'lil chinese kid wit no legs'. I need to watch the full thing. Also...this was great. :)

Saul

It was better than I thought it would be. Not something I'd choose to watch on my own but I'll watch along with Josh as it's only 5 more episodes. Well, depending on what wins the next poll. If it's Boosh I'll cancel my sub.

Sam

Well done on getting this out so fast. We don't need Won Ton on our arse.

Dryfesands

Only 6 episodes should be interesting watching it with you Josh 🤔

Matthew Towner

First!I love how you waste no time at all in watching the poll winners. :)
