2022-10-24 12:23:01 +0000 UTCJOSH: The reason there's a musical act in every episode is because Paul Jackson (executive producer) was able to apply for a larger budget by doing so. At the time, the BBC allocated more funds towards variety acts, than they did sitcoms. Therefore, Paul Jackson was able to technically classify the show as a "variety act", as opposed to a sitcom, simply because there was a musical act in each episode.

The survival instructions Neil was following was probably close to real instructions that were issued. Must have been a scary time to live.

And the whole telly situation and when rik goes to the post office is hilarious. Also helps that my favourite song from the whole show is in this one. Love a bit of dexys midnight runners.

2022-10-21 16:31:05 +0000 UTCDexy's Midnight Runners going for some kind of Waterworld-chic look...their fashion choices were bloody weird. What a weird band, I never understood why they were held in such high esteem. Yes, not a stellar episode. I think I had series two on VHS so I missed out completely on all these first four episodes that we've watched so far. I'm hoping it picks up and we get some Rik/Vyv/Neil interactions that aren't constantly being interrupted by irritating surreal stuff. And Mike...Oh Mike. Why Mike, why? He's never, ever funny. I knew from remembering the show that there would be side-mission-type stuff in it that just wouldn't be funny, at all. That's how it was when I first watched it, and I still loved it. I always set that stuff to one side in my mind, and thought of the show without those bits and judged it like that. A bit like with the White Album - there's a lot of not-great stuff on that, but you can tell the Beatles aren't really taking those songs seriously so I don't really think of them when I'm thinking of the White Album. I just judge it on the good songs and think of the not-so-good songs as experimental and throwaway. Same with Young Ones - you give people a bit of license if they're just experimenting, and not really trying that hard. You let them off, or at least I do. But I didn't think there'd be quite as much of all that side-mission-y stuff as there is. It really breaks the flow, as does Mike.

2022-10-21 10:32:06 +0000 UTCAde Edmonson himself said in an interview once that the young ones hadn't aged well. He even compared it to 'the good life' saying that jokes it that had aged far better than the young ones. Despite this I still find the scene with Rik in the queue a hysterical scene!

2022-10-21 02:54:59 +0000 UTCYeah, the Dicky & Dino sketch is a parody of the kind of TV specials that the Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, etc) used to do around that time, complete with lame gags, canned laughter and cheesy songs. I do like this episode for the way it nails Rick's character, starting with the terrible Pollution poem, then him losing his shit when the TV licensing officer calls, and finally going from wannabe revolutionary to knee-jerk reactionary and borderline racist in the time it takes to reach the front of the DHSS queue (the disparaging line about "rows and rows of little Biafran children" is a reference to Nigerian refugees). All that plus the brilliant line "this time tomorrow, everyone in England will be free and there's going to be no more social prejudice or hatred. GET UP, NEIL, I HATE YOU!" And the over-the-top Italian-American mannerisms in the Dicky & Dino sketch are done to perfection; seriously, Mayall was on top form in this one.

I remember loving it when I first watched it about 15 years ago, but I feel like maybe it hasn't aged as well as some other series because of the experimental nature of it. Still, it's got its moments!
