The Young Ones: Season 1, Episode 2 Oil

Comments

Hey Josh, I definitely think this is another show, like I'm Alan Partridge, where you need time to calibrate your equipment to the frequency of the characters. You need to see a few episodes before their outlines start to settle in your mind and you get a sense of who they are. I always thought it would be an easy transition from Bottom to this because Rik and Vyvyan are basically just Ritchie and Eddie, younger. But I've only now realised it's not as simple as that. They're similar, but there are differences. Rik's a lot angrier and louder than Ritchie, a lot more 'revolutionary'. Vyv is much stupider than Eddie and less capable of thinking more than two steps into the future. The whole social environment they're in is the biggest difference though: Young Ones is centred on student life where everybody's a poseur desperately trying to seem cool/politically right-on...whereas Bottom's focused on a dole-queue netherworld of creeps and losers trying to spin out their miserable existence with masturbation and...probably a second thing but I can't think of it right now. I'd guess that it's the different world the two of them live in in each show that probably makes Rik and Vyv seem most unfamiliar. But I think you'll start to get a sense of them over the next few episodes. Rik is still basically Ritchie(or vice versa): incredibly selfish, pathetic, desperate for sex; and Vyv is still Eddie: slightly insane, alcoholic, treats Rik like an abusive husband would, treats his body like a crash test dummy.... Anyway, it's all a journey. Whether you end up liking it or not, at least you'll be able to tick it off the list of iconic British comedies.

Yeah, the Motorhead performance of Ace Of Spades is the definitive one as far as I'm concerned. Also, the bands can be quite funny themselves, sometimes making acting appearances. Suggs's line in the Madness episode - 'you 'um it...I'll smash your face in' - always made me laugh.

Saul

No probs, I've heard a lot of people mistake strong regional English accents for Scottish/Welsh accents actually.

https://youngonesbottomrikade.fandom.com/wiki/5th_Housemate bbc went and blocked a clip......... a freaking clip for the wiki .... how pathetic Lol

TheHigh

i do somewhat agree mate , I've watched a full reactions to all the episodes from taffe316 , i do prefer the full versions for sure , not my type of music but i can still appreciate good music even if i don't like it , it deffo should still be there especially that its the reason they got so much budget for the show! then there the story and continuity... peace

TheHigh

👍👍

TheHigh

Thank you, it is a really great show. Oh ok thanks for that, his accent is very heavy so that is why I probably thought so.

After Work Reactions

Oh wow that is awesome. Lol 😂

After Work Reactions

Yea that makes sense bud. Oh ok, yea they edit down some older shows now, including US shows for offensive content.

After Work Reactions

It is a shame he passed, he was so great.

Josh, please do look into the link Michaela provided above. These slimmed down versions are cutting down too much. It's bad enough to cut out jokes and music but this one cut out plot development: at 27:18, it had missed out the whole discussion between Rick and Niel planning the revolution and the benefit concert after Colonel Vyvian got incapacited (and the lead up to the Norman Tebbit joke). Random edits cutting out some of what little plot there is, is not a step in the right direction. It will also be a crying shame if these versions cut out Madness, Motorhead, The Damned, etc

Viv was sick in this episode too. Not long after he got a pickaxe through his head😂 that other episode you mention is emblazoned on my mind aswell!! The one with Jennifer Saunders in!!😂😂

Claire Prowse

Hope he uses the unedited ones in future. Was sad not get the full Dr Martens boots song, thats the main bit I remember of the episode 😅

Danny

I know which episode you’re referring to….it’s my second favourite in the whole show 😂😂

Ben Marshall

They also chopped out a big interaction between Neil and Rik which explained what the entire concert was there for in the first place. This is what I meant after the last video about getting hold of the unedited version. They've absolutely butchered the continuity. I agree about the bit in the next episode which hasn't aged well, but I also think these things should be left in and contextualised with a short blurb at the beginning to say this was of a different time and set of moral standards. Also it's a joke at the expense of the police and specifically about police racism. Anyway, that's my little high-horse moment in the comments. Otherwise I am enjoying it, it's just incomplete.

Ian Webster

Wtf never realised that before, just looked now that's actually creepy haha

Jonny

Wondering if you recognised a young Robbie Coltrane at 19 minutes in, who went on to play Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies?

Great reaction Josh! 😃 Fun fact: that scene where the oven blows up wasn’t meant to be such a big explosion. It had been filled with gas, but then it was filled up again by someone else (who didn’t realise it had already been filled), so ended up with twice the amount of gas in! And apparently, the reason that part is in slow motion is because the heat melted the film (although I need to double-check that fact…but the thing about the oven having twice the amount of gas is definitely true)! Also, remember in the last Bottom Live show, where Rik said “We could do some really old material!” and you didn’t know who they were meant to be…they were doing Rick and Vyvyan 😄 Like the first episode, this one has been edited down! But I have a link to all the unedited episodes from both series: https://archive.org/details/the-young-ones-s-01-ep-04-bomb/ I know the link says episode 4, but it will take you to the page with all the episodes 👍🏼

Michaela

Thanks Josh, great reaction 😁 I'm really glad you're enjoying it already. Ha yeah it's perfect that he's called Vyvyan lol. BTW the 'Russian' landlord is from Liverpool (in the north of England) not Scotland. He has a scouse (Liverpool) accent similar to Lister out of Red Dwarf. He's English. Although I think he did say at some point in the first episode that he's Scottish LOL so I see why you thought he was 😁

Fun fact: every Young Ones episode has a live performance by a band because by doing that it could be officially classed as an entertainment show, which meant it got a bigger budget than if it was just a comedy show. Second fun fact: there was a "fifth housemate", who has long black hair covering her face and never talks or moves (the other characters never acknowledge her), who can be seen in the background in every episode of season 1. In this episode she can be seen sitting in the shadows next to Rick and Vyvyan when they're watching TV.

Aissa Croft

Yeah the Dr Martens Boots song was chopped (only the beginning and end was intact)….got a feeling most of these episodes will be edited for music copyright if nothing else as they had a band on every week. I’m curious if a certain scene will be cut from the next episode as it hasn’t aged well at all and has been cut from TV repeats for years!

Ben Marshall

I do miss Rik Mayall so so much! ..back when I was little and first watched this episode it was the first time I saw someone throw up on tv...I was absolutely horrified🤣!!
