I hadn't realised how ropey some of these early episodes are. I remember watching this show as a kid, on TV, and I suppose they mostly played the later series. It does get better.

There's a line in a book by George Orwell about his experience becoming homeless for several years and he says "An attractive woman would never end up homeless. Because all she would have to do is attach herself to a man and problem solved", or something similar. (From 'Down & Out In Paris & London'.) It was about 15 years ago I read it but that always stuck with me,
