2022-08-09 22:00:26 +0000 UTCSince this reaction series I've wondered about a comparison between Porridge/Fletcher and Phil Silver's/Bilko. A clever, likeable, sometimes successful schemer is unusual in British comedy. It tends to be the fool (e.g. Tony Hancock, Frank Spencer, Basil Fawlty). Del Boy and Black Adder (after Series 2 onwards) are the only other ones I can think of but they tended not to be successful in their schemes and Del Boy was still quite the fool. Ronnie Barker's Fletcher might be the closest thing to Phil Silver's Bilko. I wonder if there were ever any thoughts to making an American version. I expect it could have worked.

I mostly know him from his various appearances in ‘Doctor Who’ and of course the most famous episode of ‘Dad’s Army’, ‘The Deadly Attachment’. I also love it when Peter Jeffrey (Mr Wainwright) shows up in anything, because he always seems to play the villain or untrustworthy characters, he just has that face that’s instantly recognisable.

She liked Classical music and she never noticed when we robbed her wine cabinet. I never met his Dad. Nobody knocked on his door, we stood outside the garden and shouted his name. That's what our Mothers told us to do. It's only dawning on me now. Kids can be cruel through innocence, innit?
