JOSH: You asked why cruel people take that sort of job (a carer role). It's because sociopaths crave power and authority over the weak and vulnerable. For example, statistically there are an inordinate number of sociopaths within the police force. It figures that such people seek out roles which enable them to laud power over others.

2nd? What order are you counting them in? Seymour Matthews played the auctioneer in "Time on Our Hands", Katharine Page played Mrs. Baker in "The Jolly Boys' Outing" and Nick Scott played "Man on Plane" in "Miami Twice". I guess you're referring to "Man on Plane" ;)

Manly Stump

He was, he's also going to appear in an upcoming episode of Mr. Bean!

Interesting thanks for the link bud I'm about to check it out.

Oh wow good thing you were able to get back home safe. Yeah unfortunately you do sometimes hear of care workers treating patients poorly. Tay and my mom worked with special needs adults so I have for sure heard some stories of staff being abusive.

I'm pretty sure the male orderly is Skull Crusher Henderson from bottom episode dough as well

I love this episode. We got lost in the woods once. My brother and I (age 6 and 7) two mildy tipsy parents and my gran!! Wandered around for hours, came across a house and they drove us 2 miles back to the car. Never forget it it was terrifying!! Care home stories like that make my blood boil. I used to care for special needs children and even whilst I worked there, there were incidents of cruelty by staff. (Swiftly dealt with though) and once police were involved. Some people are truly wicked, picking on defenceless people.

Claire Prowse

It was a good one.

I looked into the Nurse story and it's apparently been proved to be not true.. But imagine if it was! That would be crazy shit man... Here is a snippet and a link to the debunking page for the story: The General Nursing Council of Zambia investigated reports of a nurse making a deathbed confession about swapping thousands of babies in 2019 and found that there was no evidence of such malfeasance, or a nurse by the name given in reports. https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2021/dec/17/viral-image/old-claim-about-nurse-swapping-5000-babies-birth-h/

The auctioneer from Time on Our Hands.

I recall David Renwick said on the commentary for this episode that he tried to make the first half of it as hilariously ridiculous and absurd as possible because there would be nothing to laugh at in the second half. He is clearly a massive 'Psycho' fan (and rightly so) with the homage of the shower scene here. Nick Swainey is clearly based on Norman Bates with his unseen 'mother' in the window (although clearly not stuffed) and Margaret mentioned the film in the first episode of series Two. There are a few more references to come as well!

This is my favourite episode of One Foot in the Grave and certainly the best episode to date at the time of broadcast. I'm really glad you enjoyed it, Josh! It's hard to explain what makes it so special but I think it's just One Foot in the Grave undiluted for me. It's an extremely tight, well-plotted episode, with plenty of story, terrific character moments, and as you mentioned, Josh, it's tense in places, truly suspenseful. Renwick is a master of plotting and it's very important to him but I think many episodes, whilst brilliant, can err on the side of convoluted and meandering in terms of story - you get little bits of plot thrown in throughout the episode and it all makes sense in the end - it's fantastic. With Hearts of Darkness, we get if anything even more of a story, but it feels extremely neat and tidy and contained. Every moment seems so carefully thought out. I find the first half is the funny half and the second is where the drama and suspense come in, and I love the way Renwick doesn't sanitise it. This isn't an adult show, it isn't a post-watershed sitcom, but when it needs to convey a certain message, it does so head-on and unapologetically. The scenes in the care home are genuinely shocking for what is essentially a family show. Refreshingly shocking. And I love that whilst Victor's heroism has featured subtly in the past, tiny victories which give him a chance to live up to his usually-ironic name, Hearts of Darkness is his crowning glory in terms of being a true victor. For the first half, he's the endlessly unlucky, grouchy, miserable, irascible Victor Meldrew, and for the second, he's the hero of the story and a force for ultimate good. The opening montage is really funny stuff, meticulously directed, the jokes throughout the first half; Mrs Warboys knowing every answer in Trivial Pursuit, the water only being 2 feet deep, Victor and Mrs Warboys getting their feet stuck in the cement, walking two hours only to find they've been walking in a circle; all fantastic and quintessential OFITG, but then it treads new ground and we get some truly bold, brilliant writing of the more dramatic nature, and Renwick has something important to say. Note that the carers (if you can call them that) were watching Bottom on the TV? A sitcom about cartoonish violence you can laugh off because it's so OTT - this is juxtaposed brilliantly with the far-from-comedic violence we see in this episode, and it's an effective foil for that. This is a dark and surreal comedy and not some anarchic slapstick -and this isn't a disservice to Richie and Eddie - they're brilliant and I'm a big fan - but as a piece of writing, it's a poignant statement from Renwick. The cherry on the.....erm......carrot cake (?)..... is the way the episode starts with Bugs Bunny outside the cage and the real rabbit inside the cage, and then we get that final scene with the two reversed. The fake human beings (because they're genuinely failing as real ones) are now trapped, and the real human beings, whose suffering we have witnessed much to our distress, are now finally free. Wonderful episode. Remains my favourite. Warm Champagne next week and it is another superb episode for very different reasons, but as I've said before - series 4 is the true cream of this largely high-yield crop. And there isn't a *bad* episode of the show full stop; we're just being especially treated with series 4 for my money.

Ash Jeffries

The old lady with the needle was in the Only Fools and Horses episode "The Jolly Boys Outing". She played the owner of the first bed and breakfast Del, Rodney and Albert tried that Mickey, Jevon and Denzil were staying at. I also noticed that the TV show the "care" home workers were watching was "Bottom". The scene where the old man gets slapped and kicked is the one that was cut on repeat showings.

Keith Pratt

It's never been my favourite episode, purely because it becomes neither real comedy or drama near the end and I'm not keen on the slow mo bit or weird old horror film kind of vibe. I think the idea for the plot is great though and unique. Next episode (warm champagne) is one of my favourites. Has lots of good gags, especially one unforgettable scene!

Classic ep!
