Mr Bean: Season 1 Episode 4-Mr Bean Goes to Town

Comments

I worked in a call centre about 20 years ago taking calls from people on pre payment gas and electric meters. Quite a few old folkes were still on the coin ones. Some people liked them for budgeting. The gas companies would forcibly install one under court order in a house where the bills were not being paid too. The metre would then only give you a % of what you put in and the rest of the money was taken towards repaying debt.

Relyx, thanks I'll definitely check that out :)

Tom Scott's videos are always fantastic. Covers such a wide variety of things, all over the world. One of the highlights for me from the last year or so was his video about microwaves. Really recommend it!

Jay Hayes, absolutely, I know :) I didn't mean to imply that it has all gone. I was just giving Josh an idea of my personal situation, so he could see some of the various options available over here. That's why I said it varies for different people at the beginning so he'd get that I wasn't trying to speak for anybody else or imply one method is no longer used :) My mum still has a card meter too and so do quite a few people I know, it's still a very common way to top up.

It's actually not all gone. The last flat I lived in used a gas card meter. I'd just topped up the card and put in in the meter every now and then. and this was a soon as 6 months ago.

Mr Bean is massive in China, Japan and many other countries across Asia, it’s great how Rowan Atkinson has the ability to make people from all around the world laugh without saying a single word.

This was the first episode I ever saw, and at the age of about five or six it was one of the absolute funniest things I had ever seen. There are a few interesting notes on this episode. It was the first to use the colour opening titles; the previous two had a slightly different black-and-white title sequence, although it’s replaced with the colour one on streaming platforms. It was also the first episode to use film for the location scenes, rather than videotape. You might’ve noticed that the policewoman to whom Bean reports his stolen camera is played by Matilda Ziegler, who also plays the girlfriend, and that the name of the club, Club Phut, is a reference to a piece of graffiti in the previous episode.

Lol 🀣 I think we all are a bit embarrassed of ourselves when we were young.

So true man, it is such a dramatic difference to newer shows/movies.

Its pretty ancient mate 52 years ago

When he turns the lights off at the end πŸ˜‚ I used to own the "Mr Bean Diary," a diary of Mr beans life, in his handwriting and with amusing pics and sketches! It was released with the show. The girl is called Irma Gobb. He has a couple of dates with her, writes her loads of love letters and draws pics in his diary of her (some amusing and dreamy, some amusingly creepy!). She eventually gets a restraining order out on him :D

I was born mid 70's, but it's shocking how late 70's and early 80's always looks so ancient. πŸ€”

I think pretty much all of Mr. Bean was made around south/southwest London since it was made at Teddington Studios, but for some reason his address is apparently in Highbury. Most of my memories of Kingston are going to punk gigs at the Fighting Cocks and I think maybe a couple at the Peel in the 2000s and 2010s. Halcyon days. Sort of.

The shoe bit was filmed in Kingston high street I'm surprised I'm not in the background, i was a goth...rolling around drunk🀣that's what was usually happening to me the time this was filmed! Haven't been to Kingston since early 90s. Bad memories... or rather no memories!!πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I remember holidays when i was a kid where we would stay in a house and you had to put money into the meter

Tim Salt (Tim Salt Writes)

Yes, old style prepay electric meters exist for real. They still do although they switched to having to top up card / keys rather than put money in it directly as you could stick a magnet on them and freeze the counter. Also you could get TV's with coin slots too as a way for paying to rent them. Mostly aimed at poor neighbourhoods where debt was likely, so it was a pay first system, I saw a lot of them growing up.

Oh wow lol πŸ€£πŸ˜† no I don't go to clubs πŸ˜…

Interesting thanks for sharing! It's crazy to see how things vary from country to country.

I used to love that disco scene, especially the bit where he just comes towards that guy waving his arms around to drive him away. Prbs first watched that when I was 6-8 years old. I had no idea 15 years later the same thing would happen to me when the girl I liked was full on making out with another guy( my best friend) in the middle of the dancefloor…

The electric thing varies for different people but when I was little (late 80s - mid 90s) we had a meter where we'd buy cards from the local shop with a set amount on it like a Β£10 card and we'd stick it in the meter by the front door, then throw the card away once the cash went on the meter. After the mid 90s we'd just pay a monthly bill. I've been in my own place for about 16 years and up until a couple of years ago I used to just top up at the shop over the road on my electric key and stick it in the pay as you go electric meter for a second to register the amount. Now I've got a smart meter so I just pay online using an app and the amount tops up almost instantly. As for the plugs, everything I've ever bought has already had the plug connected. We were taught how to wire a 3 pin plug at school and I think I still remember how to do it but have never needed to. Our plugs have the fuse built into them. I've seen the Tom Scott video about our plugs and their safety features etc, it was very interesting even for someone who has no interest in that kind of thing at all lol. I keep meaning to check out some more of his videos.
