We had a 'Ronnie and Mildred' in our family...the lengths we used to had go to to avoid their visits!! And phone calls!! Feel a bit guilty now!🤭

These reactions bring me comfort!!

Have to admit, I think Renwick came within a whisker of pushing it too far with the pair of toffs at the hotel, just layering on the posh stereotypes so thick that they were all but caricatures by the time Victor kicked off with them! But on the other hand, I spent years working in hospitality, and you really do get some people who are that obnoxiously snobbish and entitled. The weirdest I can recall were a pair of scammers who came in for a meal and deliberately set out from the get-go to find fault in everything we did, aiming to eat the food, complain it wasn't up to their high standards and then demand we offer "a pertinent apology" - literally the words they used! - while refusing to pay the bill. The key to their scam was that they dressed in smart, expensive clothes and spoke in perfect cut-glass accents, totally self-assured at all times, knowing that if people like them caused a scene in public, it would reflect badly on us as an establishment. Of course, we had no choice but to let them have the meal for free, as you can't just pin customers to the floor and rifle through their pockets for what they owe you (more's the pity). But we did at least have the pleasure of telling them loudly and firmly that they were a pair of conning bastards who could consider themselves banned. Then rang up all the other places in town to warn them, and found out they'd already pulled the scam in quite a few. It's mind-boggling just how far the right accent, the right clothes and an air of unearned superiority can take you in Britain.

"Yes, I'm very sorry because I'm going to have to throw your toupee down the drain! I'm amazed you haven't mastered the mechanics of a door handle yet - it must be very complicated with your limited brain power! Oh, and do forgive me for not getting the fur coat out! Of course, if you hadn't chopped all its legs off in the first place it would probably have climbed out all on its own but there we are! You asked me if I wanted to go on working here? Well if it means sucking up to odious bastards like you two every day then I think I'd rather remain unemployed! Thank you very much!" Absolutely perfect! One of the best Victor-on-his-soapbox moments of the entire series, brilliantly written, superbly delivered by Richard Wilson, and just so satisfying because it underlines Renwick's intentions where Victor is concerned. He loses so frequently that his name, Victor, is deliberately ironic. But he is the one suffering and we are supposed to be on his side. He lives in a mad, bad world. And whilst much of the comedy stems from his perceived overreactions and peculiarities from the perspectives of those around him, it's moments like that that genuinely show him up as the sane contingency in a warped society. The detail of the disabled man helping himself out of the car juxtaposed with the absolute garbage of so-called humanity, their self-importance, laziness, and excruciating sense of superiority - what a brilliant bit of writing and commentary. Victor is on the surface maybe quite a rude and discourteous person, certainly rather irascible and impatient. But moments like this one highlight that for all his short fuse and ill temper, he's a fundamentally decent human being with a strong moral compass. He might shout and holler but there's no real harm or malice in him; he's just woefully unlucky and a bit downtrodden. Superb episode and of course, we're on to series 4 which is my favourite series. Hearts of Darkness is an unmitigated MASTERPIECE, the very best episode of the show for my money, and I can't wait!
