Sunshine was absolutely wonderful. Truly worth the watch, so I hope Josh can add it to a poll! Also, Early Doors! I hope that makes it to a poll! I thought all of Early Doors was top drawer; it remained consistent albeit it was much shorter-lived than The Royle Family. Possibly *because* it was shorter-lived too! It was the closest the UK has ever got to Cheers I think; even the sentimental (in a good way), slightly melancholic theme song was not too far removed from "Where Everybody Knows Your Name"! :-D

Can’t believe it’s 10 years since this was made. Still seems fresh. So sad Caroline left us early. The last 4 were different but still enjoyable. I think you just love the characters and invested in them so much it was always good to see them on the Christmas Day schedule. Better than any Xmas TV we get in the UK now. My favourite episode still stands as ‘Elsie’s funeral’ god rest her soul.

Craig Cash (Dave) and Phil Mealey - two of the three writers, wrote (and Craig Cash starred in) a small 3 part sit-com called Sunshine in 2008, which also had Steve Coogan and Caroline in it, that was quite good, from what I remember. Might be worth adding to a poll one day, when we start running out of ideas, although I don’t think many people saw it, so it probably won’t get many votes. 🙂

And deservedly so, heathens!

Looks like Greg Davies would have disqualified Barbara as well, for putting the milk in first. 🤣

Aw that is sad to hear they haven't had him back, that is a shame. That is great to hear though that he is working on his own show.

Thanks for the info bud, that is a bummer she didn't want to do the show anymore. That is sad to hear that Geoffrey passed away.

After Work Reactions

Yeah that's so sad. She was great in this show, I liked her character a lot.

I found this interview from 2013 with Ralf Little: https://www.femalefirst.co.uk/tv/news/ralf-little-288990.html Ralf Little wants to return to 'The Royle Family'. The 33-year-old actor last appeared as Jim and Barbara Royle's son Antony in the 2010 Christmas special of the hit BBC sitcom, and he admits he was disappointed when show co-writer Craig Cash told him there was no place for his character in last year's one-off episode, and he doesn't know if he'll be asked back again. He said: "It's a tricky one as the co-writer, Craig Cash, rings me up every year and says, 'I'm sorry, I can't get you in it.' "It's simply because my character now has his own wife and kids - and as it's always Christmas specials they might not fit into the storyline." Ralf has most recently been seen in 'The Cafe', a comedy set in Weston-super-Mare which marked his writing debut alongside Michelle Terry - who played his on-screen ex-girlfriend - and he was overjoyed when Sky 1 recommissioned the programme for a second series. He said: "Sky are making it their business to fund and back new British comedy and they're not afraid to take a chance on something that might not work. "Obviously for somebody who's just started writing that's music to my ears, and it was wonderful they recommissioned us. We'll just hope series two goes very well now and we'll go again."

I completely agree about last week's being the best of the final 4. Josh is right about it having the same feel as earlier episodes.

Jessica Hynes who played Cheryl thought the show had gone on too long and didn't want to be involved anymore. I'm not sure about Ralf Little, but it would've been nice to see Anthony and Saskia at the Christmas dinner scene at least. Geoffrey Hughes who played Twiggy sadly died in 2012. There was a tribute to him after the credits rolled in this episode. 12 and a bit years after the decorating episode aired and it's still not finished!

Keith Pratt

Thanks Josh. The Royle Family has been the biggest surprise for me out of all the programmes you've reacted to. I didn't think it was my thing but I've loved it. Three of the last 4 were iffy (although I really enjoyed last week's episode) but that doesn't spoil anything about the show for me. It's been great and I'll definitely watch them over again at some point. Looking forward to seeing what wins the next poll 😊

Hey Josh, this was never planned to be the final episode, Caroline aherne had a script written for another special but sadly her health deteriorated and she passed away in 2016
