2025-04-06 21:37:19 +0000 UTCThis EP was amazing. I will always love the weird experimental group of a big label - f(x) i miss you everyday) - and NMIXX is no different for me. So, I'm really glad the general public is also vibing with this release and NMIXX is getting their flowers because this EP is a solid 8/10 for me. I agree where each song was placed and I think the rising action to Slingshot - which is my title track - and falling back down to Ocean is just Correct. As for how I feel about each song: 1. High Horse 9/10 I love the minimalism. The combination of break beat and jazz in this song reminds me of a lot of conscious hip hop, and the low bass licks are so wonderful in contrast to nmixx's vocals. On the structure discussion, I'm a Djangonite on this (let's ride is the pre-chorus). 2. Know about me 7/10 I thought how they blended the genres was very SM-like because the switch up was present in the bridge. And, I think the team behind nmixx has gotten so good at blending the multiple genres they reference. The way they build to the bridge/heavier electronic part by having the song get fuller with more layers helped prepare me for the switch up. Also, I really liked what y'all thought was a guitar or modulated voice (I thought it was a drone/siren) being carried from the bridge to the final chorus/outro helped the transition back less shocking. 3. Slingshot 10/10 Y'all getting excited about how weird the structure of this song was so real. Putting the chorus first for shorter songs is becoming more common and I like it a lot. It makes the song feel more complete and way longer than its 2min 30ish run time. (A song that also has this is Rescene's Going On). I'm also a huge fan of SOPHIE and a lover of Aespa's more PC Music-like songs. So, all the insane percussion songs were so satisfying for me. 4. Golden Recipe 8/10 I love this song and have a respect for Dem Jointz experimentalism. I also can't answer why he chose to combine what he did, but I think this song needed to be on the EP. It keeps with the powerful energy of Slingshot while also revisiting the genres of High Horse. Also, that "Make Special MIXXture" part gets me every time and learning about all those different violin techniques was very cool. Thank you so much for the research, Umu! 5. Papillon 7/10 A lot of the fandom thought this was the best song on the EP which is was surprised about? I think it's great, but not my favorite because of the same things you all pointed out. Some stand out parts for me is the the wall of sound feeling and the vocal chopping they did to transition between the chorus and post-chorus. 6. Ocean 8/10 I RARELY like the ballad that ends k-pop projects, but I really liked this one. The key change in "Over and over" really threw me off the first time I listened to it. But, it really grew on me, and I love how they bring back the ocean sounds from the intro during the final post-chorus and outro. My top 3 at first listen were 1. slingshot, 2. golden recipe, 3. high horse. But, after a handful of listens it's 1. slingshot, 2. high horse, 3. ocean. 10/10 amazing podcast episode. It was really fun to listen to!!! I thought it was insanely funny when Umu said "different opinions CAN exist" as if the Djangonites and Marcousins aren't fighting on the front lines of music interpretation everyday βοΈππ₯ Also, Marcus was talking about the keys being very different in Ocean because you don't want to date someone related to you?!? I literally screamed out loud. Thank you as always for taking the time to listen and provide your commentary on these releases! I'm really excited for Django and Marcus to hear NMIXX's rollercoaster because we're coming up on the perfect time to listen to it (summer!).
