I can't argue with the criticism of this track on a music theory basis but personally it doesn't bother me. It's a bit cronchy but the chorus is a huge payoff. I think there could have been an interesting discussion on the influence of shibuya-kei music on this track, in the verses, especially the group Pizzicato Five (another one of my favorites). The flute and (upright-ish?) bass sound is ripped from their playbook. The starts and stops as well, the general quirkiness of it which is set up and then contrasted with the hype-y chorus. Anyway, totally loving digging through the archives here. ✌️
