Oren's Forge PG 279

New page out next Monday!

[Click Here to Start Volume Two: Incursion from the beginning!]

===

This was a really fun page to work on, beyond just getting to revisit some old characters. I don't tend to deep dive into "my intentions" on a page because I want the work to speak for itself, and I also don't want to bully people into interpreting the story any specific way-- but one small exception here just 'cause. Feel free to skip reading the rest if you're happy with your own interpretation!

In the scene with Oren that Rask is recalling (pg 241) Oren is speaking to the other prey animals specifically, about how not to give in to their instinctual fear. However, I knew Rask would interpret his words in his own way and internalize them. This whole page is about the small parts of the whole we take away and what we make of it, even when something isn't meant specifically for us.

Quannaq is from all the way back on page 39, this time from an angle closer to how Rask would have seen him as he wondered what was the point living if everyone else was dead.

While it's actually Sprig that says Rask's name as he dies, Yarrow saying his name is meant to reflect the fact that for a moment, just before Hemlock killed him, Rask saw Yarrow's expression change, suggesting he might be open to listen.

And, last-- it's not stated explicitly in the comic and just lives in my head but you might as well know, too. The dead mouse in the snow is Rask's first solo kill, which is first referenced on page 109 when Rask and Sprig are speaking.

Yup, that's him-- his name is Cedar. He actually makes his first appearance way back on page 85, hanging out with Sprig in the background.

Wait, this is the squirrel we met at the end of Vol. 1! Do they have a name?

Gale Tazzin

The callbacks to previous pages got me to leaf through Vol. 1 again, and on page 175, Hemlock asks Oren "what would you do with a pack of wolves at the entrance--invite them in for a chat?!" Seemed like hyperbole at the time, but maybe it was foreshadowing...

Gale Tazzin

This is a really, really good montage. Also a nice touch that Sprig doesn't need any dialogue for Rask to recall, since basically every interaction the two of them had was symbolic of change for Rask

Kinda like seeing hiccup and toothless getting acquainted.

Tru7h

Okay, this is my favorite page in a long time - which is really saying something. Can't wait to see where this goes.

LukeOnTheBrightSide

The middle panels between Rask and Swift are the most powerful here.. The looks that they share.... Incredible

Raptorzs

Just brilliant, a moment demanding clarity of focus is met with a cacophony of unsettled discord. Unimaginable futures and deep personal value could be won or lost here as the moment unfolds.

Tru7h

Way to go Rask!

Karly Gay

Swift is more concerned for her mate and pups. Once the others realise she is NOT hunting them they might listed.

Marcwolf

But will she listen?

Tirosu

That's really an interesting development! I suspect that all hell is going to break loose when other wolves appear on the scene. They were not that far away. Will there be enough time for Rask to communicate with Swift?...

Pantera

I feel like this isn’t going to end well.

Microgrampup

Well, that might change things.

NightEyes DaySpring

Woah

Fixion Shepherd

This is so awesome 👏🏻 it’s so cool to see these characters again I have no idea what’s gonna happen next but am enjoying this ride :)

Interesting….. I think I get it, his instincts are just to kill, but like Oren said he’s more than just his instincts
