IVE "I'VE MINE" | ReacttotheK Weekly #7

In this episode, we're impressed by how "Off the Record" develops (and with Yujin's voice), question some of the choices in "Either Way" (but never question Yujin's vocal prowess), and discover that the tempo of "Holy Moly" gradually climbs (like how Yujin is gradually climbing my bias list)

Wooahhh cool!!!!

My guess for Holy Moly is that it's another play on Korean words. "Holy" sounds like the korean word 홀리다 [hol-li-da] which means to be fascinated/seduced, with a magical connotation, as if possessed. Verse 1 says "At times I have a strange power to manipulate people's feelings" and the chorus is essentially a spell - "On the count of three, you look back". So I think they're using "holy moly" as a spell based on the Korean word, which is still silly but maybe makes more sense when put into context :)

The lyrics in "Either Way," where they spell out IVE, has a potential third interpretation. The letter "I" sounds like the Korean word for child, "아이." So when the song goes, "They say it's because she's an I" (referring to MBTI), the line can also be heard as "It's because she's a child" in Korean. The lines just before this translate to "That child who seemed carefree Actually has such a tender heart." Here, in the second verse, the members are taking turns describing one another; "child" refers to the members. The lyrics are speaking to the innocence and purity of the IVE members while reminding us that the members are very susceptible to the hate they have been receiving. Because the members are still young, they are emotionally vulnerable. The lyrics made me fall in love with "Either Way," so I wanted to share some of the lyrics' significance and weight that have been lost in translation.

As always, appreciate the contrast of the in-depth analyses compared to the instant reactions of the regular series, particularly for "Off the Record." Personally, did not like the tempo acceleration in "Holy Moly"---to me, it seemed too jarring and musically out of place (even though it lyrically makes sense).
