While the music with very obvious Y2K influence was most probably the music earth was listening to when they began their journey. so in terms of the story the alien girls think they're fitting in by doing what they think "earth music" sounds like. this is more apparent in New Dance where them learning said new dance then going to a party is them "fitting in" with the locals.
