Just the two of us. Two weeks that told me everything I needed to know.

You know, somehow this place and this time with Gary left me with so much peace and warmth.

Before this, when I thought about the happiest day of my life, the first thing that came to mind was a day with Daryana on Almaciga beach in Tenerife — it was foggy, cloudy but warm. My first black sand, my first ocean. We ran around nude in the rain, rolling in the sand, taking photos all day long… pure joy.

Then I’d think of that first trip to Portugal with Kate — how we swam nude at night in the warm ocean at Adraga beach. (And yes, the water really was warm, which is a rare thing in Portugal.)

But now… now I think of this trip with Gary. Not a single day — the whole time we spent there. It lives in me in a different way.

Funny how I never thought much about “the happiest moments of my life” before the war began.

Back then, I was just living… or maybe “living” is too strong a word. I was existing — in a system, in old patterns, struggling, giving up, sometimes even winning.

Were there happy moments before?

Of course.

But either their flavor has faded… or their meaning got lost in everything that came after February 2022.

No — I do remember one. A beautiful morning.

It was just after I quit my job, and I went to the botanical garden at sunrise to see the lilacs. It had rained all night, and the morning was cool, still drizzling a little. The park was empty. Birds were singing. I pressed my face to the lilacs, breathing in their scent. The dew on the petals kissed my skin, waking me up, washing something off, giving me energy.

I felt free. I felt calm. I felt full.

And those three words — free, calm, full — they describe all my happiest moments.

I just want to feel that more often.

P.S. Odd pattern: in most of my happiest memories, I happen to be nude)
