This is one of the couple tool/weapons that use changing forms to conceal their true nature. It's a pretty simple one (just hold it the other way!) and was quite straightforward to design as any smith will use heat metal. Power-wise it feels most like a Flametongue but with half the power.

This pair of tongs find popularity among dwarven master smiths, many of whom prefer the minor enchantments that help maintain the internal heat of their worked ingots. It also finds use among those who wish to carry an inconspicuous weapon to highly secure facilities, easily overlooked for its unassuming shape.

Iron Grip
Wondrous item, rare (requires attunement by a character proficient with smith's tools)

You can use this pair of tongs as smith's tools for manipulating burning material. While attuned, you also double your proficiency bonus to ability checks made using smith's tools. Creatures unaware of the tong's properties initially perceive it as a simple tool and can use an action to recognize its true purpose by succeeding on a DC 15 Intelligence (Arcana or Investigation) check.

Purposed Blade. You can use a bonus action to manipulate the tongs into their sword form, and use another bonus action to revert them into tongs. While in their sword form, they can be used as a magic shortsword that deals an extra 1d6 fire damage to targets they hit.

Flames of Forges. While holding this item regardless of its form, you can cast the heat metal spell from it (spell save DC 15). Once cast, this spell can't be cast again until the next dawn.
