This marine plant thrives in salt water environments, particularly along shallow coasts. Most of the tanglekelp’s body mass clusters around a central core, but its leaves extend up to a hundred feet. From the seafloor, the tanglekelp allows its leaves to drift gently in underwater currents, nearly indistinguishable from other varieties of kelp. The lines of kelp quickly tighten around prey that swim through them, trapping fish and drowning land-dwellers, their remains absorbed as nutrients.

Tanglekelp bloom most wildly in spring seasons. Beach wardens take care to remove tanglekelp from the premises using long spears and shearing tools. Signs warn visitors of the dangers of free swimming in unprotected areas. In rare cases, assassinations are staged to appear as tanglekelp accidents.
