The Christerion Collection Ep. 1 – God's Not Dead

Beth and Matt sit down for the first episode of a new podcast called The Christerion Collection.

Beth and Matt sit down for the first episode of a new podcast called The Christerion Collection, a show where a recovering Catholic (Matt) and an ex-episcopalian (Beth) take a dive into the ever-growing ocean of religious movies to see what they can learn about this foreign yet familiar kind of art. In this episode, they watch God's Not Dead (2014), one of the standard-bearers for modern-day Christian cinema.

The Christerion Collection Ep. 1 – God's Not Dead The Christerion Collection Ep. 1 – God's Not Dead

Comments

Growing up Christian I unfortunately understand this movie on a deep level, but I do remember going to see this movie with my youth group and at the end of the movie everyone just texting each other gods not dead. Everyone’s phones went off in the theater and it was pretty funny. On another note, I am a liberal. And I would 100% use an ‘I love evolution’ sticker on my car.

Olivia

Grew up Christian, lucky enough to have only good experiences. This episode and series help me see beyond my peaceful bubble and through wider propaganda techniques. I remember watching GND at a friends house in middle school and totally falling for all the propaganda that you so neatly picked out and exposed as wild story elements. I like to think I’m smarter now.

corundum liqueur

I’m so deeply intrigued by what you just described. My morbid curiosity kinda wants to watch it for myself.

corundum liqueur

This is my favourite series you guys do it is so insightful about a big part of my youth and a lot of the thoughts i had kinda being forced to watch some of these movies or at least dealing with the pop christian fallout that came with them. For at least a couple years after the release of 'God's not dead' I remember the idea of an evil college teacher accosting you for your beliefs was HUGE and it turned a lot of christian kids I knew (myself as well embarassingly) into sort of debate bros? Before debate bros was a thing; just like putting yourself into these situations where you would make inflammatory claims s a challange to anyone around you and that is the lasting impact that 'God's not dead' had on me lol.

Jack Atkinson

Had to watch this movie in high school bible class freshman year. I remember we had a whole discussion on if the professor actually went to heaven and if it raining as he died counted as baptism... anyways this podcast is very healing lol

Sarah Pettit

I NEED you guys to know about the Christian home movies that my Christian summer camp would make and sell to the campers. There was an entire running saga of the "Dark Storm Rising" chronicles, starring two plucky teens and the reformed Russian spy that they converted to Christianity going on god-themed adventures against the forces of evil (filmed on location in Western New York). The Russian was played by the camp director, who later turned out to be a pedophile and now calls himself a victim or cancel culture. This is a formative Christian movie experience for me. The movies had pyrotechnics. They blew up cars in the woods around the camp. I own at least 5 of them on DVD, and they'd give them to us for free if we promised to use them to evangelize to our friends at school.

Flufflecat

It feels good knowing religious trauma is bringing us all together

Dee

That is wild

the chompie man

“You’re about to know god a lot better than me” sounds like something a priest that’s turned into a hitman would say

Lav

They need to do more podcasts like this!!

Ashton Jackson

I am craving more

Aidan Felker

I loved this. Thank you so much. I had no idea, but Matt and I had very similar experiences growing up. My father studied in the seminary also, graduated, and then had a family instead of following priesthood. He has a very thoughtful and in depth knowledge of Christian history and I enjoy hearing his opinions. I don't identify with Christianity anymore, much like how I think you seem to, but I also want to maintain a relationship with my parents. When I thought about it, that also would devastate me to receive a last letter from a parent just trying to convert me instead of saying they loved me. I know they love me, and it was real on a personal level to imagine this concept that I've never thought about before. Thanks for sharing about yourselves in this podcast. I look forward to the next one.

Alvin Bo Balvin

New listener to this patreon content and I have to say that I really appreciate how yall handled everything. As someone who has been in the church their whole life and considers themselves a follower of christ, how the world deals with the bible isn't black and white. It's not dissimilar from any title in our culture whether you consider yourself a republican, a feminist, vegan, etc. there are so many variations of people that follow these ideologies and who don't understand them the same way. I appreciate this podcast because yall are liberal and me not being liberal it's important to me to know what yall think about certain things and for me to do more leg work when it comes to understanding someone else's perspectives rather than just trying to shove my own down their throats. Definitely gonna listen to the rest.

Mickael Wilson

As a Christian, it's absolutely BAFFLING to me that someone can try converting someone AS THEY ARE DYING. Like accepting Jesus into your heart or whatever isn't going to stop you from dying 💀

Sierra Dawson

I subscribed to Patreon just for this podcast. This was a great discussion, and an accurate representation of how this movie is perceived by ex-christians.

Josh Bohrer

As a big TSDW fan, this was great. I'm so glad I decided to give it a shot. Excited for the rest

Nico Campbell

You guys for sure keep doing this pod cast. Like the movies are crazier too. But I love this dynamic and the discussion. It truly shows how they just are like your bad and judgmental and is legit one of the reasons i couldn’t stand going to church. The church I went to is famous too in Cali and the one I went to from 6 years old till I was an adult is famous in DC/VA area. They even promoted this movie! It was crazy! We even did as kids and teens in church, (***trigger warning school shooting**) if you did the music part we did a play where it took the columbine shootings and romanized it. How the shooters took time to ask two girls do you belive in god and pulled the trigger on both anyway. Then how God came and got the one who said yes! Like that was just so messed up to me. Then when I was 21 I was going to go to Italy for a mission trip but I found out they where going to where the vatican is, to preach Christianity because they believed that Catholics are not Christians. I was like shook. I ended up having to drop out because of medical reasons but in all honestly I discussed it with my partner. Legit even the pastor who was leading the group was from Italy himself so I thought how much he had to be brainwashed to think that this was okay and safe. To bring a group of young adults to the vatican and say their not Christian’s when the Catholics I know would never be so full of judgment. To say hey if your not Catholic your going to hell. I was shocked. The fact that they where going to do this and only 3 people spoke the launage too. This was a nondemoniatiinal church too! Like I’ve had convos with priest from Catholic Churches and they are not even judgmental. It’s just so shocking how hateful theses movies are. Also the new movies even how now they even feed into the trump side. The “one world goverment “ belief. Then of book burning , and how they banned bibles.. legit the Bible and how they secretly make them the plots just get so lost in translation now. It’s like your going to hell if you don’t belive. They are going to banned the Christian religion. It’s just dumb! It’s fear mongering and brainwashing! I’ve even been swatted and asked if I was safe and they tried to say my partner was a cult leader when covid happened. Because we needed help because someone broke in. (Long story, but I even have photos thanks to my neighbor). So if you do keep this going I would be happy to contribute.

Freyja Darling

oh my GOD this movie traumatized me when i was a teen i had a full panic attack when i was watching it 😭😭😭

Alex Ander

This is dream content for me

Maximum S Labrador

I'm here for the Beth and Matt dynamic

Marc-André Martin

As a follower of Christ and speaking for a lot of Christians, this is a MEME movie. Christians are so desperate for any type of media supporting them that when this movie came out, everyone especially in my church promoted it heavily. I rememeber watching it and remember how CORNY and how irrelevent the arguments and conversations were, and how unrealistic actual conversations have with christians and non christians occur. The movie is bad and super outdated. I would love for yall to talk about the chosen, probably one of the closest depictions of who jesus is.

Jaboyjono

As a left leaning Christian I am 100% here for this podcast. What modern evangelicalism has done with and to the Bible is deplorable. Please make more and also please review “do you believe” it is literally at times a shot for shot remake of Crash as a Christian movie.

Jonathan Olsen

GUYS GOD'S NOT DEAD 5 LATER THIS YEAR

LEO081492

Great conversation. Both of my parents are retired ministers. I consider myself an agnostic who leans towards Christianity. My parents always talked about other religions. We had a copy of the Quran, books on Buddhism, atheism. My Dad was always the only pastor who would go out of his way to welcome everyone in his church and regularly married same sex couples. Not sure how this fits but my parents were big Rocky Horror Picture Show fans and I saw that movie at least 4 times before I was in High School. I have a lot to say about this topic but I mainly just wanted to say thank you for clarifying there are Christians who aren't part of the mainstream right. One last thing. I have a "friend" who is part of the extreme right and is a member of a southern baptist church. He regularly says "I'm so glad there is a hell" Not for any philosophical reason or even as an argument. Basically just when someone pisses him off. Like if a waiter forgets to put a lemon in his water. He's the worst. I need new friends. I like to think that there's a picture of him in his yearbook with his senior quote that just says "I'm glad there's a hell" I told my Dad about this and he said, well actually (hehe) Well actually, the bible never depicts hell as an actual place. That is a very secular invention that some sects of religion have taken and used as they see fit.

withinmyself

God I loved this. 100 more please.

Rebelfox

I’m imagining Sorbo paying for the Patreon just to listen to this episode and refute it. I’m giggling

Rob Gibbons

Please make this a regular series 🙏

Ryan Phillips

I will say some of your points are valid but, when it comes to "anti-education" that is plain wrong, you will get the occasional crazy aunt but as a Christian it is extremely hard to raise a kid and find them a school that doesn't shove stuff that goes completely against what you belive down their throats. I was homeschooled and my parents are Christians and they didn't try to control or hide knowledge from me, they were and still are open to teach me anything and then explain what they think about it and then let me make my own decision. I would never let me kid go into public school right now, and I would have to prepare them alot for college.

Nick Schrock

I remember when my abusive catholic ex-girlfriend dragged me to see this movie in the theater. I definitely thought it was strange that the "happy ending" was "we hit the atheist with a car and now he's dead!" (I know the whole thing was that he repented on his death bed, but I still feel like that's not a great message)

Reilly Gillis

That was awesome. I’m here for a hundred more

Brian Whitfield

Beth bringing up that she tried to go to youth group as a kid/ teen and feeling like she was an outsider hits so hard. I did the same thing as a kid, after being brought to a babysitter who was a DEVOUT Christian and used it like it was title that made her better than everyone else; She guilt tripped me (and subsequently my mother) in to going back to church. I, being a little goth/alt/whatever I was in the mid to late 00's, felt so isolated in a place that preached community. I stopped going, and never really talked about it, but it's a small comfort knowing I wasn't the only one. So thank you for that Beth.

Katilynn Morgan

this was incredibly healing for me to listen to this. I grew up going to a christian school and a very intense legalistic baptist church. The healing for me has been slow and steady but this was great to hear someone’s take outside of the church on this film. I remember seeing it in theaters and it blows my mind to see it now realizing how it’s just literal propaganda. love you guys thank you can’t wait for more ❤️

Widget

Are we not gonna talk about how there are THREE SEQUELS to God's Not Dead?? What a franchise!

Estrogenerator

Christian here, it drives me absolutely bonkers when “Christian media” settles for one-dimensional, offensively stereotypical portrayals of differing beliefs. It’s like they think that these portrayals of atheists, liberals, muslims…are going to draw people to the faith when it is more repulsive than anything else. I would be described as a right-leaning Christian Libertarian. In my opinion it’s not the job of Christianity to utilize the power of government to enforce our moral values into society.

Jed

Working my way through the patreon content and was a little hesitant on this one. It was AMAZING! Please do more of these!

CobraJEDI

This was actually hilarious. I watched this movie when I was in high school youth group and this podcast is so fuckin accurate but my little brain at the time was like wow, this movie is so good 🤣🤣

Katerina Manuel

Please Please PLEASE do more of these! Absolutely loved this discussion and commentary!

Jenna

This was incredible and validated so much of my discomfort in going to the theater with my family for this movie haha absolutely loved it and you all should totally do “How to Save a Life” because that like… messed up my little freshman of high-school self.

YES PLEASE veggie tale content. What is the bunny song controversy, though????

welcometojen

I would pay for the Patreon for this. I forgot how much time I spent as a preteen watching Pureflix trailers on YouTube before bible study. This is everything I want now as an adult

Amanda Larsen

Absolutely loved this. You guys have got to do more.

The Pentagenarian

Thank you guys for sharing about this batshit movie. As a guy in mid-twenties from the UK we just didn’t grow up with this imposed religious media

George Marsh

No, but that sounds like both a horrible movie and a horrible experience for you. I’m sorry that pastor subjected you to it!

Kelton Hollister

Please cover the Lego Passion of the Christ… it is SO bonkers. I’d also love your takes on the “I am Jesus Christ” video game when that hot mess drops

Kelton Hollister

Nailed it. Turn that pain into power

Danny Trejo

As a former Catholic, then a former Independent Baptist, I absolutely am here for this as a series or it's own podcast! Obsessed. I know it's a little different because it's animated but would love if you covered the veggie tales (especially the Bunny song controversy) 💕

Katie Boeckman

Please check out “The Badge, The Bible, and Bigfoot” on prime

Always have a hard time picking my favorite podcast, usually between Dungeons and Daddies or Oh No Ross & Carrie. I no longer have to pick. Please continue.

William Utech

Disappointingly few "I <3 Evolution" bumper stickers on the market.

Gwendolyn Hammer

Angels in the Outfield is by far one of my most nostalgic watches - and until now I thought nobody else had ever heard about it. Nobody ever recognizes quotes from it

Erethizon_dorsatum

Please have more of these! Matt, Beth, you are incredible!

wbrett1983

As someone who still is of the faith - I’ll admit that I was a little nervous about this ep. But honestly, I really enjoyed it! It’s good to hear an objective breakdown of why it’s a bad movie based on writing and storytelling techniques, instead of just bashing on the faith and religious aspect of the movie. I really appreciated how respectful and thought-provoking this episode was! Can’t wait to hear more!

Alyssa

Wild! Loved this! My nephews watch some very 'interesting' Christian shows and I feel like I have to deprogram them sometimes.

Stacie Collins

As a reformed Pentecostal I am HERE for this. I revisited my memories of this movie in the worst possible way, 10/10 would recommend. I hope they will do more of these, I'd love to hear their take on Fireproof and its absolutely insane idea of "healthy" relationships

monty901111

We need an “I heart evolution” bumper sticker as merch

Reid B.

I always love listening to the group chat about movies, and a person who has NO IDEA what these movies are, it's so much fun to listen - great perspectives and a great listen length, can't wait for more!

Zoe Berry

Christians think they are always the victim, thank you. I've noticed that since I've gotten out of the bubble.

Lori Berryman

That was a blast! I'm also a recovering catholic and would love to see this become a series. The concept (and hosts) are amazing!

Gay Icon Yog-Sothoth

Absolutely loved this, please keep going!

Katie Madison

I need much more of this

Araina Righteous

Iiiiiittttttttsssss a crossover -3 fans found

Lauren Clem

This was really cathartic and enjoyable to listen to. I hope you continue to do this!

Evan

I loved hearing Matt and Beth talk about the film and can't wait for them to do more.

Sam&Chris

I enjoyed this ep on so many levels -- as a fan of Beth and Matt, as a film buff, and as an atheist who grew up in a small and super, super, really ridiculously intensely fundamentalist Christian town.

Lindsey Decker

Agreed. I mentioned this as I would love to see Beth and Matt on GAM. They brought a very different perspective to the review, and I loved the Rocky tie in

What do we want, time travel. When do we want it. That's Irrelevant!

Off topic but did anyone ever have to watch the Christian movie "to save a life" about this kid who committed suicide after shooting up a school? And it's this other kid trying to like grapple with why someone would do that? My youth pastor made me watch it after my ex boyfriend committed suicide...not a great time.

Nora Hopeless

I love this! I've been deconstructing for about 5 years and now identify as agnostic. this bonus content is such a great thing to get to listen to! I remember watching this movie when it first came out and it just rubbed me all sorts of the wrong way. I love hearing your takes on it 😅 also, I would just like to say the new Newsboys will NEVER be as good as the old Newsboys.

Nora Hopeless

Ex Mormon here. Love this!

Kaprielle Veroni Fioramonti

I’m obsessed and I need more!

Ben Johnson

this is such a good podcast concept theres so much to unpack in these movies

Kyna

But also don’t worry! There’s about 8 billion “people talking about movies” podcasts. And I need one of Beth and Matt doing Christian movies!

Kay M. C.

Love this so much!! Especially as an exvangelical

Kay M. C.

As someone whose been to a lot of different kinds of religious services, this shit is my jam. Interested to hear more

Caitlyn Russell

Amazing :) please to more :)

allnitegyme

I would happily listen to any and all of these.

thegreatToast 23

I loved Breakfast back in the day!! But as an ex-vangelical the lyrics really hit differently now XD

Blythe Atkinson

Ex-vangelical here. Beth and Matt's conversation was a lot of fun to listen to. I look forward to more of these in the future! (Also I definitely grew up listening to the Newsboys XD;;)

Blythe Atkinson

I wonder what the GAM / Daddies crossover audience looks like?

Rargona

fellow ex-episcopalian here! this was absolutely perfect and I hope there's more!!

Morgan Pestyk

This new show is proof that God's not dead🤣. Would love more episodes!

Allen

My cousin thought I was going to hell because I was Catholic and forced me to watch this movie with him. All I remember is the insane ending. Everything else was repressed lol Thank you for your fun analysis! I’m so stoked for more of these 😁❤️

Bishini

I just saw both of these on my feed and was like, “Whoa! Weird coincidence.”

Bishini

Y'all did way better with that than I would have. As a Christian, Christian movies make me want to throw things through walls.

Jess Houwen

I'd recommend The Chosen. Just a well made show. It follows Jesus' ministry as told in the gospels and they kinda breathed some life into the stories. Usually when people read the bible they can fall into a monotonous voice that takes away from the stories. They fleshed out the characters. They introduced Judas at the end of season two and he's just a regular guy. Reading the bible I always thought that he just had to be obviously evil, but it reminded me he was just a normal human being who messed up. I also thought it was awesome that they portrayed Matthew with characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Just a good show.

Austin Ly

its a masterpiece. Experts on the three Abrahamic religions were consulted and its just great

Austin Ly

Omg I absolutely love this. Please don't stop making these. And I can't believe y'all didn't discuss the fact that Kevin spent his whole career destroying people's faith in God but it's a good thing he got to repent before he died so he can go to heaven 🤣 deep south here and took a long time take that last step as an agnostic atheist

Kendall Crosby

This was amazing and I hope we get a full spinoff podcast of this content!

TJ Edwards

This is awesome content, and it's nice to hear from some other people who were former Christians on the topic of Christian entertainment since I am also a former Christian! I would love to hear more from Bet and Matt and hope this becomes a full podcast running alongside dungeons and daddies!!

RikuTheDawnHero

I have been really deep diving into deconstruction content and what the heck is up with America's brand of evangelicalism and this crazy right shift. I loved the dynamic or Beth and Matt. I am so excited to hear more! This was fun. Thanks!

Michaeline Collins

I can't wait to share this with my exvangelical friends!

Karen Boyd

Idk if Matt and Beth read these comments but if anyone else is curious, here's an answer to Matt's question about the "morality proves God is real" argument. A lot of Christians do try to argue what Matt said, that you can't be a moral person without Jesus. And that is nonsense, for the reasons Matt gave. But the actual argument in Christian apologetics is not that you can't be a moral person without God; it's that the existence of morality at all is evidence of a moral creator. It fully agrees with Matt that you don't need to be Christian to be a good person, and that you don't need religion to know right from wrong. But it continues with "If everyone is instilled with an innate sense of morality, where did that come from?" There's more to it than that, but it basically uses that line of reasoning to conclude that it could only come from a good, moral god. Also, I'm not trying to be a Well Actually, I just genuinely find this stuff fascinating and thought other people might too! I loved this episode and really hope we get more!

Sam J.

Please, please, please, please, please, please, PLEASE keep this going!

Spencer Mosley

As a Bible belt catholic that went to an evangelical primary school and did a month in a cambridge intro philosophy course, I straight up scored an almost perfect score in contradictory beliefs. I've been thoroughly schooled in most popular pro-theological arguments. Almost none of them hold water or remain sound under scrutiny. End of the day, this is just repeating dogma and acting like that is enough to base a life on. Its also about reinforcing the smugness and in group, the movie is not in good faith trying to teach anyone anything. All that to say, thanks for doing this series I love it!

Marcel Cabato

Loved this one. Please keep it up!

Patrick Ohl

ex mormon here please do 17 miracles

Kellie Zufelt

Omg I’m having a God’s Not Dead screening with my friend in 2 days, so this came out at the perfect time!!!

Heads up if you're gonna hop on the ASSASSIN 33 AD train, and you truly should: DO NOT get the director's newer cut (renamed "Black Easter"). Just... trust me.

Michael Nixon

Just wanted to second all of the other comments - absolutely loved this. Thanks Beth and Matt!

natattack

Everyone should watch "Assassin 33 A.D." An outrageous religious movie that is also anti Muslim and deals with time travel. I recommend it because it is very serious about its message but comes across like parody. A poor synopsis - College students get recruited by a Muslim millionaire to build him a time machine. Sub plots include - 2 of the main college kids have a love plot, time travel with different outcomes i.e. multiverse and paradox plus paradox correction, Jesus downloading English from God to speak with one of the college students, a B plot that deals with a contracted security guy whose family dies at the beginning but gets a happy ending, Muslim mercenaries gunning down Roman soldiers and at one point Jesus, and one of the most ridiculous uses of the word jihad I have ever seen. Its a movie that is so bad, it becomes funny. I hope this makes you want to watch it and discuss.

Alex Beighle

OMG, I absolutely loved this! So much fun, really loved the vibe! Beth's summary was really concise and I loved how the critique wasn't just "Christians are dumb," but really picked apart the messed up bits and wildness of the movie. I had a high school friend who was very into the Newsboys, quite the flashback lol

Amelia

This is actually great, and really therapeutic. PLEASE DO MORE

Josiah Muskrat

The version of Christianity in this movie is pretty much the way I was raised.

Darren Jensen

Just gotta say, as a born and raised Baptist (who somehow managed to keep his faith) I 100% get Matt's anger about the dogmatic BS. But like they said, there's still plenty of reasonable, even smart, religious people out there if you really look.

Jason X

highly recommend the movie soul surfer which blames the girl who got her arm bit off by a shark, on her skipping a mission trip LMAO

Alexis Marie

Truly amazing I remember when this movie came out and got popular I was in highschool and out in the open Atheist and remember the amount of hate and dumb questions I had to bat away

Dance_JR

GAM is less kind to its targets than Matt and Beth were. I find it hilarious, but I could see how some people who like this might find it mean. Worth a listen though.

Gmork

Love it!

Dj Woodring

I just graduated w a BA in philosophy and iv been saying FOR YEARS philosophy is nearly inextricable from religion/god. THANK YOU MATT.

maddo

Maybe some of the older ones too like The Single's Ward, God's Army 1 and 2, The Best Two Years, Sons of Provo, Baptists At Our Barbecue....shit there were a lot.

Amy Record

I fucking loved this!! Please do more!

Cleo Klauminzer

I love the pod overall, while you both may have christian backgrounds, it's lacking christian nuance Overlooking basic christian concepts with certain topics. I hope you invite poeple from the religion you wish to discuss Otherwise if can be rather distasteful. Scrolling through this comment section it greatly leans to those who dislike religion which means you're leaning off neutrality.

Jalen Barnes

Oh for sure. Though surprisingly I live in a Christian college community and the students who weren’t Christian [Idk why you would go since chapel every day and theology classes are required to graduate.] were the most obnoxious people to anyone who disagreed with them, constantly wanting to debate and be angry at every little thing. Rolling their eyes at everything biblically…. For 4 years straight. Saying this as a women, it was mostly women who would challenge you, the guys were chill and didn’t care 🤣🤣 But the women made sure you knew they were third wave feminists.

Morti Mushy

Long time listener, first time caller (commenter lol) and dedicated Catholic who loves the church. Interesting podcast. I've been a fan of Freddy/Matt and the crew for a long time (VGHS, RocketJump the Show, Story Break and now D&Dads). I think it's interesting that they would even attempt this podcast, why they feel it something they need to explore. When you listen for a long time they like to poke fun and laugh at Christians from time to time (just made a Catholic Priest joke last episode) I cringe and then just turn a blind eye and keep listening and enjoying the content, becaue I dont think they understand what they're doing when they say those things or make those jokes. I think they're all genuinely super nice talented funny people. However you can clearly see whenever they make these jokes and poke fun at Christians/Catholics/Jesus they quicky search for or provide an over-the-top laugh or seek validation from one of the other co-hosts. I sense a real fragility, yet an interest in the faith. Certainly enough interest to take it a step farther and launch this podcast. I like to think Catholics and Christians are on the same side, but when it comes to these type of movies I see the differences. Christian cinema for the most part is terrible. Terrible acting, scripts, low budgets and over-the-top cheesiness. I saw this movie when it come out, I remember enjoying it, enjoying the themes of it, the music and Kevin Sorbo actually did a great job acting. I did not text 100 people after lol. I could like it while also not totally buy into all the concepts. I do believe that up until the last minute of your death you can be saved, so I'm fine with that theme of "it's never too late" thats 100% true. They way they went about it is extreme and unlikely. I'll continue to listen, not so much because I care about the movies but I enjoy getting the personal tidbits and anecdotes and what happened to them in their faith journey and what they believe now and why. To Matt's credit he speaks extrememly honestly about the good and bad experience he had growing up Catholic and going to Catholic school and doesn't just say bad things, he also says some good things and talks about good people he met along the way. I think there is a reason that science fiction, fantasy, video games, etc. are so popular in our culture. I believe we are created by God, we have a soul, that there is a heaven and a hell and angels and saints and demons. That's pretty wild stuff! And it's REAL and we are a part of it. We all play a role. So it's not surprising to me that such a large protion of our population are drawn to the fantasy and adventure genre because deep down in our souls we are all called to it. Part of me is hoping that Matt and Beth, and the whole D&Dad crew, which like I said is made up of awesome, kind, talented individuals can find there way to or back to the Church.

I went to college as a Christian and didn’t experience any pushback for my religion; it stinks if you did, but that’s by no means universally true.

Nathan Grice

For anybody who wants more of this, check out God Awful Movies! The hosts didn’t have a Christian upbringing, but the premise is otherwise the same

Nathan Grice

I love Evolution stick but it has pokemon on it

Chris Wade

Christians collecting humans like kids collect Pokémon. "Gotta Convert Them All, Jesus Christ!"

Lienisaur

I love prince of egypt. Great songs.

MeetooCat

That scene where he says "how can ou be mad at God when he doesn't exist" or something has been shown in my church and churchgroups several times. I have never seen the entire movie, but that scene I have seen often.

MeetooCat

Long time D&Dads listener and recovering Baptist, current Episcopalian here: I love this. I had to watch many many of these movies when they came out (and before I did lol) and I love the critical look at these films. Looking forward to the next episode!

Beck Webster

Case for Christ is based on a book of the same name. Solid author.

Jacob Baldridge

FYI dreamworks authorized a musical of it. Previews look amazing.

Jacob Baldridge

Love this pod. Growing up the only big Christian movie I would watch was The prince of Egypt. I also some what reminded vegie tales because of the songs

jen Rogue

Christian here, one could even say I lean conservatively. While i disagree on some points made overall this was great. Maybe a suggestion is to have a current Christian on in order to address the issue of potentially creating a strawman yourselves.

Jacob Baldridge

This is so fucking good

Chris Hutton

Pleassseee make more of these!! I Was raised in fundamentalist baptist household, listening to people break down why the movies I was forced to watch made me feel so gross is super refreshing and you both are amazingly funny and insightful💕🩵

Mort

I was in a Catholic highschool when this came out. Im 90% sure we took a field trip to watch this movie. I hated it.

CopperKnight

Lol reading the comments have me slightly concerned so I’ll be the one Nondenominational Christian to say I saw the movie when it came out and I honestly didn’t really remember much. All I really remember was that in reality the specific premise of Christian students forced to do stuff like that? It’s a lot worse than just writing the words “God is dead”. I agree all Christian’s need to question their faith and really dig deep in theology on their own but the anti Christian theme on collage campus is actually insane. Gods not dead two, teacher sued for answering a question about Jesus. Yes it happens and coming from a family of Christian teachers it’s honestly terrifying how much you have to tip toe. Idk just my perspective since everyone else wanted to go down the Christian’s are bigots train 😅 But a movie I found much more interesting than Gods Not Dead was a case for Christ. From what I remember it was in the perspective of an atheist journalist trying to insist to his wife, who is Christian, that she’s wrong. I found his journey quite interesting in of itself and it’s a true story.

Morti Mushy

This is an awesome podcast! I would definitely listen to all of these

Doot Doot

Please let this be its own podcast!!!

Cass

Podcast itself was great, but i gotta appreciate how Christerion Collection night genuinely be my favorite podcast name of all time

Juno Parker

this is swag

Megan Shively

I absolutely loved this, Beth and Matt present a sensitive topic as down to earth funny conversation that rings alot of story real bells.

Shane Murphy

Please do more episodes!!! You guys could watch Miracles from Heaven or War Room :) also I would die for a veggie tales episode

Shelbs

Reminds me of the stories my sisters had going to a bible camp and being told that our cousin was going to hell by one of the camp counsellors cause he wasn’t baptized

Mr.Jorts

I demand, nay beg, nay genuflect! Please do more, the people need Christerion

Abdelmelek

i love this! please do more episodes

renaeisgae

Oh this concept totally has legs. I could see a Chapo/Christerion guest Movie Mindset episode. Get Will Menaker on this, he'd love it.

Racing for Tips

Plz more

MEMORY REDACTED

This was SO GOOD! Hope this becomes regular/would listen to film analysis about any genre

John Lyon

I love this so much. You HAVE to watch Assassin 33AD it's the most batshit Christian movie ever made and also... surprisingly interesting?

Mitch

Haven’t even watched yet but I’m requesting a minimum of 10 more episodes

Chris’s Secret 3rd Ball

Angels in the Outfield! Oh wow, haven't thought about that film in a while, but now that y'all mention it, I do remember seeing the trailer for it every time I watched the VHS copy of The Lion King.

Kuko Creations

No you won't need to watch the movie

James Lewis

This is great! Please do more!

Tris Winters

Very fun and interesting! Never knew wild stuff like that exists :0 Also what a win to have another podcast with Matt!

Risotto

This was super cool! Hope you guys do more

Fia

Next episdoe???

james carter

Haven’t listened yet- is watching the movie a prerequisite?

Imran

God loves evolution bumper sticker on my hemi Prius.

Matt

Had a great time with this.

Daniel Atkinson

This was so fun! Would love more episodes of this 🙂

Peydon Bush

This was really interesting to listen to, I’d love if y’all did more with this concept!

Michael Hughes

This is absolutely a hit, definitely want more. Check out the popes exorcist, they straight up blame the inquisition on the devil which is a wild stand point and would love to hear yalls perspective

joe doe

Loved this, hope you keep it going!

echo dek

Need a Christerion Collection mainfeed ASAP, then a Cruciflix Patreon.

Doyle Just Doyle

Love this!

Zenabel

Please please please do more. As a progressive Christian who grew up around a lot of right wing fundamentalist insanity, this is so cathartic to listen to.

Wesley Reagan

I was hesitant about this but this is an amazing project

Greenbay97!

More please

Greenbay97!

Fireproof

Kelly Kunze

Totally grew up with the Newsboys, I may still have their CD buried somewhere. But Matt & Beth I highly recommend looking up their song "Breakfast" As an adult now it's just wild.

Elisha Daniel

more plz

Ian Johnson

I’m so obsessed with this podcast and I know a lot of other folks who would be so into this. So thoughtful and interesting. PLEASE continue with this podcast, and expand it!!

Kelton Hollister

Hahahaha right? They showed that in elementary school in Bible Class. Note it was a public school. Also we watched a movie explaining how George Washington was protected by God in history class. Had a bunch of miracles listed. It was nuts.

Mark Smith

WOW Magee and Me. I haven't remembered that show in decades

Josh Mangan

This is incredible! More please!

Alexander Eby

My dad was a Southern Baptist preacher when I was growing up. American Family Radio was in charge of our lives. Their headquarters were about an hour down the road, too. Tupelo, Mississippi. They did the Disney boycott until Chronicles of Narnia came out then bam it dropped. But yeah Veggie Tales, Magee and Me, Buttercream Gang -I think-, Gospel Bill, tons of Christian shows and movies.

Mark Smith

You can find it on YouTube!

Theodore Johnson

This is very good and I would listen to this series

logan jilek

I was still a Christian kid when I watched this movie and I swear it started me on a road to questioning and eventually to non-Christianity. The Christian characters were so unlikeable and the non Christians were betrayed as evil monsters. It made my brain do a factory reset.

M Moreno

Just a few minutes in and gotta say this has some serious legs. Hope y’all continue it!

Bad Fiction

Also came to the comments to politely demand Veggie Tales please! They were the basis of my catholic childhood 🍅🎶

Ellen H.

Please. Do. Veggie. Tales.

Lavender

This reminded me of when I was 12 and this movie came out and my Christian friends texted me, a Jew, god is not dead

Esme Singer

grew up in an evangelical-adjacent cult and I'm so here for a new religious trauma comedy podcast

Vivien Ling

As an ex-catholic I burst out laughing at that joke while at work. Coworkers were so confused

Jacob James

Real

StratoSpell05

As a philosophy graduate student, this conversation was simply splendid. Glad to hear us philosophers are so accurately displayed in media as tyrannical atheists, lol. Gotta say, radical christians love to misrepresent and weaponize the Nietzschean "God's Not Dead" passage.

Austin L Hardee

Wow loved this sm y’all! Your conversation was lighthearted and funny but also brought up some really great points about religion and religious people. Can’t wait for more!

Colleen

Such a good podcast! I’m in the same boat.

Carmen Sterk

Beth was right. Should have been Cruciflix 😂 Would totally subscribe to this podcast

Sheila-la-la-la

I have interesting thoughts on “morals with/without God”. As a current Christian who is nowhere near conservative.

Levi Jo

As a person with enough religious trauma to power a jet engine this was so true. My family raised me Southern Independent Baptist which is just a fucking cult

Chrystopher Black

I NEED this to be a full podcast.

Hannah Gramson

As someone who grew up without any religion this is extremely insightful and interesting

Anthony Luch

brb going to pray for an "Angels in the Outfield" episode.

Eric Willey

Ooh thanks for the reccs. I know what I’m doing with my afternoon

William Cumpose

Check out “God Awful Movies” if you like this content

Gage Gibney

I LOVED this. I’m from a Catholic family but also went to non-denominational churches throughout my teen years, so this hits hard.

Jason

I WANT to share this with 100 friends but is there any way to access without asking them to become a Patreon supporter of an unrelated podcast they’ve never heard of (D&D)?

Rachel L

Will wasn’t on this one

Rachel L

As someone who grew up in a fundamentalist christian household now trying to unravel all that, i loved listening to this! I would love to see more of this I'd listen to every episode

Bethany

Not at all what I expected but danggggg just had that feeling of finding something you didn’t know you craved, please make this a usual thing

Collin Hoepf

Please make this into a podcast

Chase Payne

The "lapsed religious person grapples with the weird culture they grew up in" genre began for me with the "Good Christian Fun" podcast, and I am delighted to hear more of it from people I already know are funny.

Glenn

Yes more yes

Maxwell Findling

It's so weird coming from wendigoon talking about the story of faith and listening to this.

Rusty_Bell03 Bell

Love this! I used to be super religious, so hearing this and hearing y’all discussion is very fascinating and therapeutic at the same time

Mark Mayfied

That's actually amazing. Subconscious mistake? 🤔

Bex Boster

Omg no but I wish I did. That sounds wild . Lol

Bex Boster

Omg yes! I am currently relistening through the first season and so I haven't looked at any new episodes in the last like 6 months. And I saw this pop up as a notification and I immediately came over to listen.

Bex Boster

I could listen to 8 more hours of this. As someone with no philosophy ed, I’d love a deep dive

Michael Kurowski

This was great, loved the energy between Matt and Beth

Justthingstbh

Super excited for this, hope you guys make more episodes. I remember being in high school feeling really grossed out when my cousin made me watch this movie with him, even though I took my christianity really seriously. It's interesting to hear you guys who actually know about filmmaking give language to some of the issues I had with it.

Noah Benson

Someone's random veggie tales sounds pop into my head. Fortunately, it's usually pretty benign ones like "where is my hairbrush" or the Spanish/English one about how the tomato cannot dance like the cucumber.

Dj Travioli

This was really resonant with me as someone brought up conservative baptist. Really love how y'all address what's messed up while also examining why the movie works for a large audience.

Josh Mangan

Don't worry, PLENTY of people commented saying this when they brought it up on Teen Talk

Josh Mangan

When this movie came out my youth group in church wanted to do a big lesson/watch party for it. They recreated the movie poster on a whiteboard, so black text for god, red for not, and black again for dead. BUT, they also wanted to have the showing be like a theater and set up some dramatic red lighting. so a bunch of teens walk into a dark red room with the words GODS DEAD bc the red light makes it hard to see the not. Irrelevant to the actual discussion here but it’s like the only fun I had relating to this film

Brett Owen

Not sure if you have listened to God Awful Movies which did this also

What do we want, time travel. When do we want it. That's Irrelevant!

That's where I first heard of Daddies too.

Gmork

Courageous would be so fun to listen to them talk about lmaoo

Denzel Casey

I grew up religious but left when I was in 8th, I could always tell when my friends from my old church were watching the movie cuz I'd get like 12 texts saying "God's Not Dead" they'd watch it like every other week 😭

Denzel Casey

Anybody else remember The Ride? The one from 97 about bull riding and Jesus!

Theodore Johnson

I feel you! Dad is still a pastor while I’m living my best bi life

Theodore Johnson

This rules

ElliotGrapeEater

Im an atheist who grew up in a very Christian family and went to a private christian school and this movie and its sequel were required "texts" in my senior year Apologetics class. It's really nice to hear other people talk and laugh about how insane this movie is!

Faerunner

Totally false. They threw him out as soon as they found out and reached out to his victims.

Niklas Starck Westerberg

Love it

Jackson Schleppgrell

Absolutely love the discussion around this film. Me and my friends used to watch it a lot on weed back in the day to make fun people christians but I've been looking for a better discussion on its flawed logic. Also Matt and Beth are a great combo

Oskar Schmerschneider

This was so good!!

Ash

Beth is really channeling Sarah Marshall with this and I love that for her

Andrew

I loved this. The catharsis is **chef's kiss**

Michelle McCartney

Those guys covered up their lawyer being a sex pest for years until this past January then called his victims liars.

Melevolent

Omg I was shown this movie in school! I can't wait to be healed 😔

frankie why

This is absolutely amazing! I would love to see further episodes of this!

Brodie Tumbleson

That would be amazing

Breo Padden

Loved this!

hayley aleigh

More of this please! I could listen to these two talk movies for hours on end

Corva Cobb

Fascinating hearing Americans talk about this topic, where I'm from there is no real relationship between left/right and your religion. Politics and religion are distinct outside the US. We also don't get these Christian movies, going to have to track this film down 🤣

Johnny Udall

Love this! One of my favorite childhood memories involved this movie, because while watching this movie I found out I was allergic to pecans! God may not have been dead, but I for sure was. Can’t wait for more fun content like this!!

Atticus0w0

Oh my God, please please please do Carraige us next absolute shit show of a movie

Josh & Nanni Westgate

As a pastors kid this movie caused a freaking ruckus when it came out. I think my family watched it opening week

Caden Stovall

Such a fun podcast, I'd love to hear so many more episodes. Growing up southern baptist in an incredibly hostile christian home, this hits so good. Hearing your professional thoughts and your personal stories is so welcoming to me. I have hundreds of other movies I'd love to hear you do episodes on, good and terrible. Great stuff, thank you!

Jess

This was so fun and interesting, looking forward to more!!

hopelesslyhanna

This was so fucking good and I need more. I would pay an amount of money entirely separate from what I pay from this patreon to hear you guys talk more about this kind of movie. Such a phenomenal podcast idea and I cannot wait for more 🔥🔥🔥

JD Heisey

I didn't know how much I needed to hear sane takes on this movie. Almost everyone I grew up with are the kind of people who love these movies. I love my family and they're all wonderful people, but I've always had to just shut up and pretend these movies are good to avoid having a lecture about my faith from my grandparents. I can't wait for more of these.

Zac Childs

Would listen to soo many more of these episodes if you make more!!

Catherine Bittar

mmm yes good podcast thank you

And Wentzel

Starting my own knock off podcast "Blank Covenant" Great episode, really recommend the latest If Books Could Kill episode on "God and Man at Yale" that covers one of the origin books of contemporary fundamentalist anti-education writing

Evan Barrett

As someone raised christian who is unsure if I still believe in it, really really fantastic

Eli

RM exmo 👆

Caleb Roberts

I’m glad someone’s watching these so I don’t have to. :-) I like the perspectives you both bring to the analysis.

MovieDefenders Podcast

ok i’m obsessed w this concept

Kerro

As a heads up, I heard about this podcast from Eli bosnick who is 1/3 of God awful movies, I feel like a crossover would be super easy since he already knows about you as something g tells me the catalyst for this show was perhaps inspired by them.

Cameron Jones

Me, an ex jw

Jade Rodriguez

Hi I’m a recovering Christian, my jist of the whole thing, veggie tales is the best take away from it

Wyatt rides

Oh fuck yeah

BlackMario69

I was given a copy of this movie for chrismas as a child, it was then used as a "gift for the family"

Max

"Ex-episcopalian?" Bro, "expiscopalien" was sitting *right there!*

Mathilda

Loving this concept. Have you heard of the movie Sunday School Musica?l

Doug Pike

So excited for these after Beth’s catholic priest joke last week

Collin Hoepf

As an Exmo, I am LIVING for this! At some point u gotta watch some of the wacky ass shit the mormon church has put out. Maybe meet the mormons or once I was a beehive.

Alysha Knaphus

So hyped for this!

Emma Davis

I need to watch it, but then I'm really excited to listen to this!

Carlos Orjuela

Omg I wanna recommend a movie for this it’s called Courageous or there’s another one called Facing the Giants

Matthew Hansen

Me, an ex-Mormon: 😲🍿

Ryken Wright

Whose ready to relive their religious trauma?!?!

JakeFrostick

So excited for the righteous and respectful review of this amazing film

LayinBrix

This is going to be good
