[Talking Dad] Ep 1. - A Man and his Handshake
Added 2021-12-29 18:04:02 +0000 UTC
We revisit the first seven episodes (released prior to the start of our Patreon) to give them a proper Talking Dad. This episode finds us in a very introspective mood as we reflect on our characters and how much we setup in our first episode without even realizing it!
Spoiler Alert! Do NOT listen to these until you've finished Season 1! Because we're recorded these much later, we talk about (and potentially spoil) events that happen throughout the entire first season.
I enjoy the opening dad facts and you guys just chatting just as much as the rest of the podcast.

If you’re still wondering, first 7 are about the episodes but through the lens of how they hold up and relate to everything that comes after. I’d say do episodes then talking dads, that’s what I frequently do. Lots of good bits in the first 7 talking dads that are worth it though it’s a little less related to episodes that episodes 8 on

So guys. What are the first 7 talking dads about. And when do they start correlating to the episodes? It's my second time through but nenever listened to talking dads. I'd like to do episode then a talking dad? Or should I just rad dog talking dads?

I definitely like dungeons & daddies more than critical roll or dropout or adventure quest

What movie are you talking about at the beginning? Is there a dungeons and daddies movie?

I feel to constantly be able to look back at yourself 2 years ago thinking how cringe you were, is really just an amazing sign that there’s growth as a person, maybe you’d prefer to stay the same person forever, but it’s so crucial to embrace the personal growth in a positive manner yk

Thank you for season one making me laugh the last three months as I listened. It's been helpful to forget a little

I can’t help but compare you guys with JRWI. Mostly because you two are semi-popular indie d&d podcasts with a comedic tone, but most of their comedy is character comedy, while yours is mostly table talk, which I find very interesting. Not bad, interesting.

I just listened to this episode for the second time. Hearing the gang giggle as much as they did was so heartwarming.

The time travel they edited in was the best joke ever. I thought they weren't gonna bring it back around

I know that this post is old, but Beth brought up Terry Jr. saying, "Uh probably die." That's the line that made me stick with this podcast.

I disagree with the episode one being better because they took turns to be quite i prefer when they just talk shit and joke around and shit. I wanna play dnd that is like that.

I 'm very happy to have started listening to this podcast because this had inspired to finally start dnd, which I'm happy to start, so thank you.

naddpod is an excellent example of combat done right as well. I don't think I've ever had negative feelings towards any naddpod combat.

I didn't realize the cheating was retconned. Not that it matters much because they had such a trauma bonding moment and by the time we see her again she is so far removed from the person she was when she gets that call. It's so redemptive.

That’s a really good point and I totally agree! I definitely think both pods have amazing and original takes on dnd. That said, I would be curious if Anthony feels, for example, like the rp-heavy vibe of DAD makes it harder to run big combats bc there are less defined parameters. Or maybe it’s totally fine because it lets less experienced players engage fully without having to get crunchy about distances and components!
On the other hand, NADDPOD’s rule-set lets PC pull off creative and hilarious upsets, but they’ve talked about their audience getting pissed off when they loose track of spell slots (which is INSANE BEHAVIOUR, to be clear). I think both approaches are 100% valid, but I imagine they lend themselves to certain styles and scenarios of play.
You’re right that we can’t assume what other creative projects are like on the inside, so I guess what I’m really advocating for is a round table with Anthony and Murph. Give the people what they want! Debate Murph (you coward) in the forum of the people’s dnd court! Or have, like, a guest show!

I would love to hear about Matt and Beth getting to know each other, and how that impacted on Darryl and Ron. I think it's so brilliant on a re-listen how much Darryl just didn't get Ron to begin with, but how much he comes to love him in the end

Being mean to each other in character is so great for the dads- I wish there had been even more conflict like that in the series- but I wonder if it might not go so well for teens, I feel like that might make everything super real and anxety right off the bat. I think that degree of separation where y'all don't immediately break down crying for killing those guys at the beginning is so important for making this a fun funny podcast to enjoy. I feel like the audience especially on discord complained too much about the dad's being horrible people but that's the point! They are MUCH better characters with flaws and much funnier too.

I'm not sure I'd like to listen to anyone talk about the "weaknesses" of another podcast! Each are great in their own right, and I don't know that you could compare apart from saying "D&D I guess"

I would be really interested to hear Anthony’s take on NADDPOD, which I assume is on the list of other actual play podcasts you checked out.
It stands out to me among most other actual play pods for production values and focus on entertainment, although their main campaigns have a much tighter rules set than the Daddies thanks to Normal Ass Dude Murph and Constraints Only Empower Me Emily Axford.
Anyway, I think it’s another very successful take on creative professionals making an entertaining product, and I’d love to hear Anthony’s take on relative strengths/weaknesses of these very distinct approaches.

Its small but I really appreciate that they said they did a second session 0. It kinda seems obvious that oh this is the rough draft session ofc they can do it over but sometimes groups get stuck in trying to flow correctly or, in a not so pretentious way, they just didnt know what they were doing wrong. Shows a good example to dnd players

You may want to put the spoiler alert above the blurb about the episode so it’s immediately viewable to newer patrons scrolling through the feed. This is probably the first video new subscribers will be interested in watching and they may not look closely enough to avoid spoilers!
