He's so disarmingly stupid/bumbling in the first half, but the second act turn when he descends into jealousy and becomes controlling and unhinged is fascinating and terrifying. I also posture that Aaron Echolls (spoiler) from Veronica Mars is a terrrrifying villain especially if you look at his multi season arc of a manwho is rich and famous and can get away with anything and especially with so much of what has happened with people in positions of fame and power utilizing it in similar fashions IRL

What showed the growth was realizing that if he died Nick would have nothing, but if he went to jail, Nick would still have a father. The growth wasn't giving up Nick, the growth was giving up his freedom so that Nick didn't lose everything. At least that's how I understand it.
