[Talking Dad] Ep. 46 - The People vs. Glenn Close

Will sits out this episode (don't worry - he's fine!) so the rest of us get to heap our praises upon his lawyerly demeanor as we discuss courtroom dramas, our dad chemistry in court, as well as talking a bit about our artistic tastes as time has gone on, as well as our favorite music videos.

Your interpretation of the situation is valid, especially if you have experience as a disabled person. I personally have ADHD, which is extremely hereditary and has a lot of negative behavioral consequences. It's less a "mental health" issue than it is a neurological disability. I was absolutely the worst kid, and I was treated like a pile of shit for it. But the judgements that I was the "worst" in the class, "worst" at socializing, or "worst" at meeting developmental milestones were still TRUE by comparison to my peers. That's what makes something a disorder. It's a hard balance to strike between internalized ableism and an awareness that I am the worst at the things that my disability hinders. I think this is a good teaching moment to say "Hey, for those of us with experience being neurologically disabled, this hits too close to home and hurts." That said, I wouldn't call it "ableist" so much as "ignorant about the degree to which real live humans have free will and agency when something is fundamentally broken about their brain."

caitortot

Omg i love all the improv so BEAUTIFUL you guys!

Brendan Borowski

Throwing Lark and Sparrow under the bus as the worst kids now feels pretty ableist with the revelation that the Oaks have this hereditary 'curse' or whatever you want to call it. Obviously they can and should be held responsible for their actions but to talk about them being Not Okay as if it's just a character flaw feels like villainzing mental health. That's what you get for making it canonically not a choice, lol.

I read somewhere that Anthony did an escape room style game at his wedding. How did it work and how did it go?

What would be the last words of each Dad if they were to die with only the other dads around and how would the other dads respond to those last words

Mutemath's "Typical" is also a crazy and creative music video.

Nicky Wayne

Please please please have 13 people do a re-enactment of that jury transcript. I want that podcast.

The best music video is clearly Power Hour by RocketJump. It really captures the mood of the late 2000s where people where parodying the shit out of everything and it was a pretty irreverent, dare I say more innocent time - when Youtube had become massive but before it became super corporate, clinical and algorithmically overloaded with targeted data collection.

Joshywoshy

Only slightly disappointed that when Ratticus said they had a whole transcript of what happened she didn't introduce her co-counsel, Well Actually, who would interrupt and contradict Daryl every time

Chris Smith

Because that wouldn't be funny

I love that they love Mission 2 Zyxx, it’s one of my all time favorite podcasts

Marcy Brown

I still don’t know why Bill didn’t just cast β€œzone of truth” at the witness stand
