In the Game of Thrones world, Valyrian blood mages made dragons out of wyverns that naturally existed in the world. Somehow they made the wyverns bigger, smarter, and able to breathe fire and called their new creature dragons. Funny how Valyrian blood mages making dragons out of wyverns using "magic" is eerily similar to Professor Crabshaw making dragons out of alligators using "science". Of course, GRRM wisely chooses to place his story hundreds of years after dragons rose up and focus on people; otherwise, his stories could have been just as zany as this one.
