Due to the incredibly cruel/incredibly popular sport of bear-baiting I would imagine most people would have seen a bear at some point. Of course bear-baiting was dying out in England by the time count Eric was around, (mostly because the Puritans wanted to ban anyone anywhere having a good time), but there were still plenty of bears left. The count was probably able to purchase his bear more cheaply because demand for bears was down since the sport was banned, and of course he had access to foreign markets were bear markets were still lucrative and making bears fight lions or bulls was still considered a good time. Interestingly enough northern europeans seem to have a fascination with bears. The first settlers of Iceland were known to keep pet bears, and Russians also enjoyed having pet bears. One of the main characters in Tolstoy's War and Peace starts dancing with a bear at a party and when the police show up to try to end the party the party people tie the policemen to the back of the bear and release the bear who immediately run to the river and swims across. The policeman almost freezes to death and the party people have to pay a fine for mistreating an officer.

Between the dream like quality, dream within a dream, the flower pressed to people's eyes to induce sleep, people with animal heads and vice versa...that feels like a lot of allusion to Midsummers Nights Dream.
