To my cringe horror, I remember thinking this would be something cool to perform as a monologue in high school. I don’t think I even told my teacher I was performing it but decided to memorize it on a long bus trip to the competition. I can’t decide if it was better or worse that I absolutely did not have it memorized and made up 3/4ths of the performance. My critiques were a) that it was not appropriate content, and b) that I had mispronounced the word brassiere. Needless to say, I did not advance in the competition.

I got the impression that it wasn't a vision of the past but actually ghosts taking mortal form again. "No--it was no dream--I gazed upon a foul rout of votaries long dead, come up from Hell to worship as of old; ghosts that bowed before a ghost." While the Turks killed the beast's mortal form the creature's soul still binds the souls of its worshipers in hell, and on certain nights they escape from hell and practice their rituals in flesh once more. It also reminded me of HPL's "The Mound" where the people of the mound send their spirits to the surface to reenact battles and surface dwellers confuse them for ghosts.
