Same here, I heard it was pretty popular but considering the name and the basic description they give at streaming sites I wasnt that enthused about watching it. I am really glad I decided to watch it here. Enjoyed every minute of it.

2024-10-11 18:11:11 +0000 UTCI truly love this series honestly, I can't wait for season 2 to come out, thankfully I read the manga for the Apothecary Diaries as well, so I don't have to wait quite as long for more of the story. I should explain a little thing the anime cut out, the reason Maomao gave that mixed angry/scared expression a while ago when Jinshi asked about if Lakan was Maomao's father. It was due to a traumatic event when she was really young, after Lakan finally came back to China and found out what happened to Fengxian he would go to Verdigris basically every day begging to find out what happened to Fengxian and Maomao, the old woman who runs it use to absolutely beat him bloody with a broom. That's how he found Maomao, he was sitting in a side street next to Verdigris after a beating, when he saw a little girl picking herbs (probably poison), he realised who it was so he tried reaching out to her telling her who he is, Maomao was about 3 years old at the time, it traumatised her at the time and she says that memory is what she associates with the word fear. A weird frantic man covered in blood crying that she's his daughter while trying to hold her... I get why it traumatised her... but honestly the more you learn about Lakan the more you feel bad for him, I hope Maomao accepts him as her father one day, he does care deeply for her. Also they hint that Lakan is doing everything in his power to find a cure for Fengxian's illness, so I'm sure we'll see them again.

(Same thing happened to Al Capone, by the end of his life he was fishing out of a kiddy pool in his backyard). Likely contracted from her time being a streetwalker after she gave birth to Maomao. During those three years that Lakan was gone. I don't think Lakan is at risk of contracting it though. Given the fact that neither of them ever seemed particularly interested in sex. Since they were both thinking they wanted to play Go or Chess during sex. Knowing Lakan he'll bring her home and probably live out her final days playing Go together. It's mentioned earlier that he adopted a nephew to run his household. So he's not expected to produce an heir anymore. He can spend his days looking after Fengxian and loving her. Fengxian was more or less Meimei's big sister the same way she's Maomao's big sister. So she's happy to see her finally be reunited with the man she loves. It's such a great story and so unique. This is why I love Anime, you'd never see such a unique story come out of Hollywood. It's the same tired tropes, nothing new is ever tried. Or at least never with brand new material, they have no qualms about trying new ideas with established stories. Where the new ideas don't fit. There's never anything new made with unique ideas like this.
