EMPATHY FOR MONOCLE MAN?! - Apothecary Diaries 1x23

Comments

A quote from an earlier episode that really comes into play in this episode: "I could beat her at chess, but never at Go" Even after he agreed to the bet, he still picked the game that would ensure his loss. He loved her so much he couldn't bring himself to ask anything of her she wouldn't want to do

Why would Lakan help get Maomao in to try and save Jinshi if he were trying to get him killed?

Michael Aagaard Nielsen

Was if ever confirmed if lakan was trying to kill jinshi as a way to get his daughter, or do we only know for sure suirei was Involved, no Manga spoilers or future episode spoilers pls

as you've seen Lakan isn't a bad person, he's a tragic character who didn't realise what he'd done until it was too late, it completely recontextualises a lot of what he's done so far, like telling Jinshi that he once "destroyed a courtesan's value", he wasn't gloating, he's just been beating himself up about it this entire time. This whole time he's just been a doting father who loves his daughter Maomao, it's just... he's also Maomao's dad, both of them are kind of insane and have eccentricities that kind of come across as villainous. Genuinely Lakan is one of my favourite characters in the series, his story is fantastic, and on a rewatch/re-read he's a lot of fun, most of his actions prior to this were either things to help Maomao, or give her little mysteries to play with for fun, and she obviously enjoyed them (especially the poisons ones).

Yeah, Lakan initially comes across as a creep. But after this episode, all his previous actions in hindsight. Come across as a father who once made a mistake and is now trying to move heaven and earth to be with his daughter. Seemingly the only thing left of the woman he loved. Of course because he's so him, he doesn't seem to take into account Maomao's own feelings. Of not wanting to have anything to do with him. Also Maomao's abilities come from both her parents. Remember her father is a master strategist who has a talent for utilizing people. While her mother was a master of both chess and go. She's inherited the genes of two geniuses. And you may have surmised. Lakan's brilliant but clumsy Uncle is Maomao's adoptive father, her mentor in medicine. Making dear old dad actually her great uncle.

Excellent writing when you can turn the creepy villain type character into a sympathetic character in one episode (actually half an episode since the chess match took up most of the first half). Reminds me a lot of the once piece backstories of minor characters that really hit you in the feels. Also, very Maomao like to end up winning a chess match via "medicine" instead of actually winning matches.
