I think this is the first time Maomao has referred to Luomen as her adoptive father, they've alluded to it a few times, like when we found out he's a eunuch, but this is the first full confirmation, I don't know if you'd count this as a hint... but Maomao never actually refers to Luomen as dad, she always calls him Pa, which is more casual despite the rest of her speech being more formal (the anime subtitles don't translate it properly for some reason). when we learn more about Maomao and Luomen's past I'll probably have to explain some things, because it is a little complicated, but if you think about what we know about his backstory, you'll get an idea of why Jinshi was shocked, everything is interconnected in strange ways.

Courtesan's were required to be great company outside of the bedroom. Usually being skilled at music, games or just being good conversationalists. Even when it came to the bedroom, they often ended up serving the one client, until said client grew tired of them. It had a lot more in common with being someone's mistress, than being say an escort or a streetwalker. In fact a number of the Kings of Europe had prominent courtesans as mistresses. For example Charles II of England carried on a long affair with the famous actress/courtesan Nell Gwyn. And supposedly her name was his last words. Though Charles the II was probably the most notorious womanizer in the history of the English Crown. Having multiple mistresses throughout his life and fathering at least fourteen bastard children.

2024-10-03 18:25:48 +0000 UTCThe whole thing about high ranking courtesans keeping their purity to maintain their value sort has similarities to today's Japanese Idols where a lot of them are not allowed to be in romantic relationships (at least publicly) because it would make them less appealing to their zealous fans. Marketing and public image tactics have been around for a long time.
