Those peasants are not his responsibility, yet he took out a massive loan in order to save them (from the lord who left them out to dry in the first place no less). As a result he then basically has to sell his daughter (and thus the inheritance to his own lands/people) to that same lord, who everyone already knows is a scumbag and will abuse them. He's not saving anyone, just ruining his own house. It's one of the reasons being a good person and being a good ruler can sometimes not be the same thing. Anyway, no point in worrying about that since the misfit squad is here to fix things.
