Azuma does want to give Erza a fair chance to defeat him so he technically gets what he wants out of her, but also remained in compliance with his orders. If Erza loses though its game over for FT.

Very ominous narration from Lucy too, "We believed we would win", one hopes there's more to that than a straight up admittance of defeat
