SUB vs. DUB

We haven't addressed this in a while here, and now, with having just started Fairy Tail and all the uproar either the sub or dub would have created, it's a good time to again explain the process.

We don not do sub vs. dub polls here. We did it a couple times and they devolved into anger, name-calling and all sorts of nastiness. The only time we've really had that issue here. Plus, there are a lot of people who are always pro-sub and a lot who are always pro-dub, so that defeats the purpose of a poll designed to find out if, in an individual case, one is better than the other.

The method I use is, I have a few fan sites where I can read sub vs. dub debates and avoid spoilers. I will go there and see what the general consensus is. In the case of Fairy Tail, it was that both are quite good, and there was certainly no preponderance of evidence for one over the other. So, I went with sub because I go native unless there's a good reason to go dub instead.

We've all seen that, no matter which way I choose, some people will not be happy. The biggest issue I have here, as far as detracting from the great times watching anime together, is stressing out over sub vs. dub when starting a new series, as I know it's ALWAYS gonna create significant unrest.

I do the best I can.

I prefer dub so I can focus on the art, able to eat with ease, and watch without text being my eyes main focus, since I barely speak Nihongo (Japanese). Though I am glad there isn't any "fire in my belly" phrase. All the same I'll watch excitingly 😃.

I just think fairy tails dub is better. Just my opinion , but also I'm not the biggest fairy tail fan ether got to ep 100 something... don't stress about it

You don't have to speak the language to know quality voice acting, just how you know Astas VA wasn't great at the start but got better over time. Also, i do know a good amount of the language, as its one of the few extra i'd like to learn fully in my life. Often i'll find myself correcting subtitles on certain phrases, but its rarer than you'd think. Vocal inflections, emotional delivery, hell just how INTO the role the VAs are, you can easily tell all of these things, if you want a perfect example look at Konosuba in japanese, i know the dub is decent but nothing will match the energy of the VAs in original japanese. Thats what i mean

I'm curious how you know for sure the japanese VAs are good or no without ever speaking the language also how confident are you the subs are correct ive seen the same sub on different platforms that have different translations. No hate just genuinely curious like I can tell Astas VA is not good especially early on and say like erwins speech just hits home but on average I have no frame of reference as I don't speak the language.

I hate the sub vs dub argument. People just need to let others enjoy things the way they choose. Everyone has a preference based on different reasons. If a reactor starts a series one way, people need to accept that. I have my own preferences, but I don’t see the point in voicing them in the comments of a reaction video, because that isn’t what the conversation should be about. Regardless of the language, it’s the same great story, and that should be the focus. Try not to get discouraged over it, Curtis! Your fans are here for your reactions to our favorite shows, in whatever way you choose to digest them 🙂

As someone who always watches both versions I think the Fairy Tail Dub knocks it out of the park with almost the entire cast having also worked on the FMAB dub. But it’s important to go with whatever’s best in your opinion, we can only give our thoughts and let you be the judge

WhateverIFeelLike

I really have no preference, most of the time I'll go for dub just because i prefer listening in my native language, but if a show is way ahead in Japan then I'll watch Sub as well. I'm here for your genuine and hilarious reactions, not going to ruin my day if you watch sub over dub or dub over sub.

To completely get rid of any confrontation here, how’s about you switch between 6 different dubs and different types of subs to make everyone feels included, simple.

I'm personally of the opinion that an anime should ALWAYS be watched in sub first, then, upon rewatch, you should do dub and decide for yourself which you like more. Even the most supremely well done dubs sometimes miss the mark on certain things, and its important to get the original context of the series by watching it in japanese. So for me, the system we've got works very well, theres rarely an exception where a dub is so phenomenal that it deserves to be put forward (DxD is a good example)

I'll usually watch subs on my own when I have the time to dedicate my full attention to a series, but I think dubs work a lot better for reactions so that I can background noise a series. Especially for long series that I will never find the time for otherwise.

You good 👍 witch ever you want buddy

Kenneth hardy

yeah i remember it would get super crazy and personal for some people even though its honestly pretty trivial

Verth37

So far, it's been good... You shoulda seen some of those wars when we had polls on sub vs. dub... YIKES! 😁

Spaz Boys Comedy

the dub is actually pretty ok i just went back and watched a couple episodes in dub just to see but im still glad you chose to do the sub because its how i first watched and im also glad to see a bunch of people in comments share their opinions and not start any real mean arguements

Verth37

Dub solely because Michael Jones from Achievement Hunter’s rage quit voices a future character

Thomastheterminator

Dub version is better imo. The VA's deliver really well and its among the animes like Yu Yu Hakusho and FMA:B where I think Dub makes the rare win over sub. Regardless, you're going to get the FT experience. THAT is something I've been waiting on for a while now. I am just glad you're giving it a shot :)

DevilJynx

Personally I always go with the sub version, simply because I have seen a lot of different dubs where you could hear that the VAs didn't give a shit and didn't put in the same amount of energy and emotions into what they where saying. I know that doesn't apply to all the dubs, but I just feel that the safer choice, as to not ruin the anime for myself, is to stick with sub because they haven't disappointed yet. In the Japanese versions I can hear/feel the raw emotions and that is what I like, and I will be real and say that very few things outside of anime are able to for instance make me cry or have much emotion involved with it. I do realize that to many, listening to a language they understand is easier and that is fine to each their own. Which is why you should choose whatever you feel like.
