Supplements for body odor and two to avoid

Many of the supplements listed below are effective for both stool and body odor

Included bellow are a few supplements you may also want to avoid, particularly before going on a date lol

Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll is increasingly recognized as one of the primary dietary supplements with potential benefits in managing body odor. These supplements aim to combat body odor from the inside out, contrasting with traditional topical deodorants that merely mask the odor.

Chlorophyll can act as a natural deodorizer by binding with odor-causing compounds in the body. When ingested, chlorophyll helps neutralize these compounds, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract. While foul-smelling stool tends to be a byproduct of dysbiosis and other issues in the gut (particularly SIBO and fat malabsorption), chlorophyll can be an effective way to reduce unpleasant stool odor. Anecdotally, many of my clients have also reported reductions in body odor, although the mechanisms for this effect aren’t entirely clear.

Chlorophyll is known for its detoxifying properties, which can help eliminate toxins, particularly heavy metals, from the body. This general detoxification ability provided by chlorophyll likely contributes to many of its benefits.

Modified citrus pectin

MCP is one of the most effective supplements I’ve seen for body odor, particularly for smelly armpits. While there isn’t any research specifically addressing this application of MCP, its powerful detoxification and chelating properties make this use unsurprising. MCP is one of my favorite binders and an all-around supplement for general detoxification. It has been shown to effectively remove heavy metals, attenuate biofilm accumulation, and expedite the removal of glyphosate and petrochemicals.

Consider anywhere between 1-3 servings daily.

Spore based probiotics

A healthy gut microbiome influences body odor by reducing the bacteria that contribute to odor production. Because the microbiome is intimately linked to the health and function of the skin barrier—as well as the skin microbiome itself—spore-based probiotics can have a profound impact on body odor through direct modulation of the microbial populations on the skin. Spore-based probiotics also help reduce stool odor.

Supplements to Avoid

L-Carnitine & Choline

L-carnitine and choline, when taken in high doses, can lead to a body odor commonly described as “fishy.” This occurs due to their metabolism in the body. When L-carnitine is broken down, it produces trimethylamine, aka TMA, which can be released in sweat and urine. Some individuals have a genetic predisposition that affects their ability to metabolize TMA effectively, resulting in higher levels of this compound and, consequently, stronger body odor. It’s worth noting that this doesn’t happen if L-carnitine is injected, as TMA is produced in the gut. Spore-based probiotics may also limit the conversion of L-carnitine and choline into TMA. Betaine can also cause body odor in some individuals.

Foods rich in choline, such as eggs, liver, and certain fish, can further increase TMA production. If you're experiencing strong odors after taking L-carnitine, consider adjusting your dosage or dietary intake from different sources.

While these supplements and foods aren’t inherently bad—too much TMA can be problematic, but that’s a conversation for another time.
