The Extra Saved the Terminally Ill Princess and Ran Away - Chapter 47

Chapter 47: I am Finn, the Princess's Attendant

***

"Sigh…"

The musty smell of the dungeon filled my nostrils with every breath, making me frown.

The rattling of chains with every movement was a constant reminder of my less-than-ideal situation.

No, not just less than ideal, downright terrible.

Well, maybe not the worst possible outcome. At least they were willing to hear my explanation, since I hadn't resisted arrest.

The problem was what I had done to Bifrons last night, turning him into an unrecognizable pulp.

What had the instructors and Irene seen when they arrived?

A completely destroyed arena.

The Imperial Princess, unconscious and covered in wounds.

And a boy, calmly stabbing a bloody mess of flesh.

My explanation—"This meatball is actually a demon, I swear!"—wasn't exactly convincing.

All the other demons had been incinerated by Solaris, and I was now in Finn's form, not Berry's.

If Ian or Selina had been there, they could have corroborated my story, but they were nowhere to be seen, presumably having collapsed upon reaching the main building.

No witnesses to vouch for my identity as Berry, just a one-eyed swordsman standing amidst the carnage, his sword still drawn.

"Damn it, I would have arrested me too."

At least I had surrendered to the instructors before Irene, that crazy woman, could attack me.

That's why I had avoided immediate execution, and why my current situation was merely terrible, not the absolute worst.

My name would be cleared as soon as Ian, Selina, or Lili regained consciousness.

But it was still annoying.

After all that effort to save the academy, I ended up in a dungeon… It was a logical decision, but still annoying.

"This won't do. I'm going to demand a hefty compensation once this is over."

I had originally planned to ask for one of the academy's treasures, but now, I was going to ask for two.

"Sigh… When are they going to wake up…?"

I sighed, bored out of my mind, when a loud crash echoed through the dungeon, followed by a familiar voice.

Crash!!

"I'm telling you, I'm the Imperial Princess!!! Get out of my way!!!"

I wasn't sure when Lili had become so hot-headed, but… I could barely suppress my laughter.

If I was right, she now knew almost everything about me.

And the fact that she was acting like this meant she was ready to face the truth.

Crash!!

"Finn!!! Where's Finn!!!"

" Pfft… This is hilarious…"

I looked up at my Princess, who had somehow made her way to the dungeon, and said,

"F-Finn…!"

"Greetings, Your Highness. I am Finn, your attendant, back from the dead."

***

They finally relented, agreeing to a three-way meeting between Lili, Grace, and me, to assess my "threat level."

They probably thought Grace, a member of Berry's party and a lie detector, would be able to see through my disguise.

Ian and Anna somehow managed to join the meeting as well, but… it didn't matter.

My Trace Changer was broken, so I had to attend the academy as Finn anyway.

"Um… so… are you… Berry? Or… F-Finn?"

Grace, usually calm and collected, stammered, a rare sight.

Lili glared at her, and,

Grace, seemingly unable to focus under Lili's intense gaze, fidgeted nervously.

I took a step towards her.

"Call me whatever you want. So… I'm Finn, who was also Berry… Any problem with that, Grace?"

"F-Finn…!!"

Before Grace could answer, Lili cried out, her voice filled with a strange mix of emotions. I tilted my head, puzzled.

"…? What's wrong, Your Highness?"

She avoided my gaze, her voice barely above a whisper.

"N-Nothing…"

"Well… for now, Finn is Berry. I… I checked, just in case, and it's definitely the truth! However…"

Grace's gaze shifted to my missing left eye.

Her expression was a mixture of pity, regret, and sadness.

She gently touched the skin next to my empty eye socket.

"Even if you weren't Berry, we've confirmed that you defeated the demon Bifrons, so there shouldn't be any problem. And we have Ian and Lilisiana's testimonies as well."

But what did you sacrifice to defeat that demon…?

Her whispered words were meant only for me.

She seemed to think I had sacrificed my left eye to defeat Bifrons.

I didn't bother correcting her. I looked around at the others, their reactions varied and amusing.

Ian spoke first,

"So… Finn disguised himself as Berry… but now Berry is Finn… So… who am I friends with? Berry? Or Finn?"

'…He's definitely an idiot.'

I had no time for idiots. I turned my gaze to Anna.

"Um… may I still call you Berry…? I'm more used to that…"

"Sure, whatever."

"Then, Berry! Do you have a prosthetic eye? For your missing eye?"

I flinched.

I saw Lili tense up at the mention of my missing eye.

But I couldn't ignore Anna, her eyes wide with innocent curiosity. I looked at her and answered,

"No, I don't. Why? Can you make one for me?"

"Yes! That's the only way I can contribute to the party!"

Anna fidgeted excitedly, like a child about to open a present.

Whether it was her alchemist instincts, eager to create something new,

Or genuine desire to help the party, it didn't matter. It was beneficial to me either way, so I nodded.

"Then I'll leave it to you, Anna."

"Yes! Leave it to me…!"

And finally…

"Could everyone please excuse us? I need to talk to Her Highness."

They all nodded and left the room.

Creak. Thud.

Silence fell, a heavy silence, broken only by Lili's nervous glances, her eyes darting around as if she could hear them rolling.

"First, I should clarify this, shouldn't I? As you can see, Finn is alive and well, Your Highness."

"H-How…?"

How did you survive that fall? she was asking.

I didn't need to explain. The proof was right in front of her. I pointed at myself.

"You've seen how strong I am, Your Highness."

"That's… true."

She fidgeted, her fingers twitching.

I had tried to ignore it, but now that my identity was revealed, I could ask.

If I was right, she had somehow learned about my sacrifices for her, and as a result, she had fallen ill, just like after the Empress's death.

So, there was only one question I needed to ask.

Which son of a bitch had taken advantage of her vulnerable state?

'That's low, even for a villain. Preying on a sick girl? I'll make him pay.'

So I asked,

"Your Highness."

"Y-Yes?"

Who gave you that ring?

"So, who is this rumored fiancé of yours? The one who proposed while I was gone?"

As her attendant.

Or as someone who had saved her life.

I asked, as if I had a right to know. Lili's eyes darted around, her expression flustered.

"W-Well… that is… um…"

I had never seen someone's eyes tremble so much.

It was fascinating, and incredibly annoying.

Considering Lili's personality, she should have been at least somewhat fond of me, Finn. And yet, she was so reluctant to reveal her fiancé's identity.

So, I put on a hurt expression and said,

"I see… Of course. A mere attendant, asking about Your Highness's fiancé. How presumptuous of me, even within the academy walls. Please forgive…"

"That's not…!!"

Got her.

I smirked internally, watching her squirm, her head still bowed, her eyes darting upwards.

She slowly reached out, her hand trembling like a leaf in the wind.

She extended her index finger, pointing…

"…?"

…at me.

But I had asked about her fiancé.

I looked behind me, wondering if there was someone standing there, hidden from my view.

'There's no one there.'

All I saw was a gray brick wall.

I turned back to Lili, her finger still pointed at me.

…I had to ask.

"Your Highness."

"Eek! Yes!!"

"Did you… marry a ghost or something?"

Do I have some kind of psychic ability I'm not aware of?
