Kouichi Sugiyama – 1988 Developer Interview

http://shmuplations.com/sugiyama/

Like all Dragon Quest fans around the world, I was deeply saddened to learn of Kouichi Sugiyama’s recent passing. I wanted to do my part in celebrating his work with these three vintage interviews. Two of them cover Sugiyama’s personal history and approach to game music, in which he advocated for game composers to learn the fundamentals of music theory as he felt this would elevate both game music and video games as a whole.

The interview with Satoshi Tajiri, while focusing more on Tajiri’s career, exposes a side of Sugiyama which has not often been appreciated in the West: that of the tireless promoter, facilitator, and communicator of gaming culture. Indeed, there are many more interviews in my archive between Sugiyama and other legendary developers/composers, and I hope to continue translating these for all to better appreciate his legacy.

as for the duos--i don't think that ever materialized (at least not in the public consciousness--devs may have had personal ties, as Naoki Kodaka attests to here: http://shmuplations.com/sunsoftmusic/). Probably the biggest reason is that sound driver wizardry gradually became less important once PCM was adopted and game composers could just drop in whatever .wav file they'd created. ultimately it's one of those "incorrect predictions" about the future that makes these so fun to read imo!

thanks, glad you enjoyed them! and thank you for the comments on the interview formatting, we try to make sure the accompanying media is more than decorative, and comes at a logical place in the reading experience. we're actually in the middle of a huge site redesign right now, that should make the reading experience far better (finally making everything responsive for mobile etc), and will include comments/rss/a bunch of other things that have been requested over the years

These were really great interviews, thank you! The accompanying images, videos and inline references appeared just as I was thinking of looking further into those parts of the text. I am curious about this quote however, " ... I think we’ll start seeing “duos” of music programmers and composers, or music programmers who are stars themselves." Were there any famous composer / music programmer duos in Japan?
