I think one of the main challenges these days for 3D rendering artists is it to make the skin of a human character kind of believable. Over the years I thought I have found a fairly good recipe but you know, technology evolves and the goal to constantly improve the own work lead to more experimenting with the DAZ Iray shader and it's options. This process revealed some deficiencies when rendering with Spectral method, which is usually the preferred method for skin. It all of the sudden turned my long used settings upside down and I had to experiment again, a lot, to find a setting for a believable skin without Spectral until NVidia can resolve these issues - it is not a problem with DAZ Studio, it's indeed the Iray Render Engine that needs some work.

Anyway, skin settings are very complex, the adjustments work like gear wheels in a clock, if you adjust this you have to adjust that and that and that also, more Subsurface Scattering needs more Bump and more or less Translucency and so on. This explains the very different versions of one character in different lighting conditions, just to try out the look under different circumstances. And I try out different skins, with colored skin being on the more complicated side of it. - Like Kimo, a DAZ Original Skin for Genesis 3 Male which is portrayed in this bulk of images with Genesis 8 Male and gens. Body and facial hair is self-created SB Hair again, the bold head is intentional - I love it that way. ;)

You don't need to, but if you like, tell me your opinion in the comments.

You're right, I even uninstalled two characters that came with Dain 8 lately cause they don't have gens nor any other features, Manu doesn't even have a store promo - wtf!

Agreed that skins are one of the most difficult aspects to get right. For my characters, I think I've achieved a measure of success if the character looks alive and would be warm if you touched him. Having said that, very few of the DS characters come into that category, being too pale, too dark, too blotchy, too shiny, too powdery, pale faces, no gens etc I don't really understand the surfaces controls but play with them until I get what I want. However, for my best characters I find myself reverting to a few good character UVs as the basis for wet-and-tanned skins and your body hair. Renderosity's Tween Rocco is good as is DS Donnie for G3M and a few others.
