Kazzy, I thought I’d shed a little light on Why the different versions. Spielberg had planned to have a summer 1978 release, but Columbia Pictures was in dire financial straights. They were precariously close to bankruptcy, so they pushed and released an incomplete version in November 1977. That’s the theatrical version. It was a box office success, and saved Columbia Pictures’ from bankruptcy.. Spielberg later approached Columbia for financing to complete the film, but Columbia had one condition or no money: an addition to the finale that was against Spielberg’s storytelling sensibilities. But he needed to complete the film, so he said yes. He shot the extra scenes he needed, plus the new finale material Columbia had demanded. Close Encounters of the Third Kind: Special Edition was released in 1980. Just around the 20th Anniversary, Spielberg was able to make the Collectors Edition, keeping most new material shot for the Special Edition, but finally removing the studio-forced material. The 2017 40th Anniversary “Director’s Edition” is an identical cut to the 1998 Edition, but it was a 4K restoration. Better sound, better picture, same cut. I purchased Close Encounters on iTunes. It includes all three versions (accessed via iTunes Extras).

Well, if she can’t watch the Director’s/Collector’s Edition, then I hope she chooses the Theatrical. The Special Edition had a studio-forced ending that Spielberg didn’t want.

Whichever version she watches will be better than not watching it. Edit : I thought I did mean "The Collector's Edition", released in 1998, which Spielberg had declared as his "final cut". But, somehow, I wasn't aware of the 2017 40th Anniversary "Director's Cut" was actually a thing, and apparently that is Spielberg's "final final" cut.
