Here's a bit of trivia that's not a spoiler. Mel Brooks wanted someone who sounded like Frankie Laine, who'd recorded many Western-themed songs, to sing the title song, so he put an add in the trades seeking a singer who was "a Frankie Laine type." Frankie Laine answered the ad. When it came time to record, Brooks didn't tell Laine that the movie was going to be a comedy, because he wanted him to sing the title song as though it were for a straight-ahead Western action-drama movie. That's how he sang it, and it suits the film perfectly.
