I really thought Mal had either replaced his gun with a fake one, or removed the bullets. I just found it odd that he would be aware of the possibility of a betrayal, but sit next to her with his sidearm between them. LEOs are trained not to do that, so it should have been obvious that she might try to take his weapon. And, there must be something about having an antique laser pistol, but still using projectile weapons (even though they have sonic weapons).
