The 2025 Statblock Importer is here!

Hello DMs,

I'm excited to share an update for the D&D Beyond Statblock Importer that now supports the new format from the 2024 Basic Rules and Monster Manual. The Statblock Importer is a browser extension that is available for Chrome or Firefox, and is provided as a benefit for Epic Tier patrons. It can import free monsters from the Basic Rules, homebrew statblocks, as well as any monsters you have paid for from D&D Beyond.

The whole extension has been rebuilt on a new framework to support recent changes in browser extension requirements, and has been given a new coat of polish.

Please let me know if you have difficulty with the extension, or with any particular statblocks. I haven't tested it with every single monster, but it's easy enough for me to adapt it for special cases.

Enjoy!

I'm not planning to add support for other websites- it's a burden to maintain the extension for if those sites change how they format their statblocks.

Evan Bailey

Can the statblock importer be used on other sites than DNDBEYOND? Like if i wanted to import something from Better Monsters' reddit page?

LOS

Just used improved initiative for the first time for my game and it was amazing! The integrations you have built in are so helpful and my players loved being able to see what was going on in the battle so clearly. I plan to start using it in all my games! Thanks!

Ethan Dixon

Hi, Evan. I just love your tool. I've been using it for years now. Quick question: do you intend for the Importer to import spells as well?

Felipe Ramos Sant Anna

So do we have to pull each 2024 monster over, or will the normal ones in the MM become preloaded at some point?

Brad Koch

I am brand new to improved initiative just signed up today. is their a way to import character sheets from dnd beyond? or do I need to manually enter them into improved initiate?

redroadrevival

I second that :)

Troels Graakjær

It doesn't do this yet, I'll look into adding this as an option. Thanks for the suggestion!

Evan Bailey

Evan, does (or will) Improved Initiative calculate Encounter Difficulty in the new 2024 fashion?

CHARLES PAYNE

Fixed! Thank you, sir.

CHARLES PAYNE

Version 1.0.1 fixes this issue, and is available now. Make sure you're on that version and let me know if you're still having the issue.

Evan Bailey

I too am having this issue. When is "soon"?

Gray Embry

I'd prefer the new layout over the old one

Taylan Erol

That's a good point, it should work as a default if you don't put anything in. I bet it used to do this before I rewrote it. Thanks!

Evan Bailey

So I tried again today with 1.0.1 - I got the same error. But then I manually typed in the correct target and it worked as intended. :-)If you haven't entered a target URL, is the display in grey text of the target URL meant to actually work as default (which I assumed, but doesn't seem to be working) or is it meant to be merely a prompt to you that you need to enter that URL yourself?

Lindsay Cullen

I'd consider that. Do you prefer the new layout?

Evan Bailey

Do you plan on adding support to display the new 2024 statblocks layouts in the improved initiative app? Or will it only support the 2014 statblock layout?

Brayden DeWitt

Thanks for the quick response - I’ll check it tomorrow & report back. πŸ˜€

Lindsay Cullen

I'm stoked that Imp Init still formats the abilities and modifiers in the 2014 way, rather than the 2024 way. So much easier to parse and space efficient!

Victor Navone

The new version 1.0.1 will be available soon. Once you're on that version, please make sure that the target URL is set to https://improvedinitiative.app/e/

Evan Bailey

Hi Lindsay, thanks for the feedback. I just submitted an extension update that should fix an issue with the target URL. Once you're on 1.0.1 please ensure that the target URL is set to https://improvedinitiative.app/e/ and let me know if that helps.

Evan Bailey

Evan, I have tried using the new importer with MS Edge and Chrome. In Edge, I am getting "File not found - It may have been moved, edited, or deleted." I am getting "Your file couldn’t be accessed - It may have been moved, edited, or deleted" with Chrome. The versions of both browser's extensions are v1.0.0, so I'm guessing that may be a factor. How do I go about forcing a new, updated version? Thanks for your help!

CHARLES PAYNE

Hi Evan, very excited for this. Thanks for your work. However I installed the extension, logged in to Improved Initiative and tried to import the stat block for a 'Cultist Hierophant' (https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/5194955-cultist-hierophant). I clicked the importer and it gave me the pop-up window listing all the attributes and looking correct, but when I click the 'Import' button I get the message "Your file couldn’t be accessed. It may have been moved, edited or deleted. ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND". In case it's helpful, if I click the 'options' button, the target url has the default "https://improvedinitiative.apple/e/" - I haven't manually entered anything. I also tried once with all the option tick boxes off and once with all ticked. I've also quit and re-opened Chrome. I'm using Chrome (Version 133.0.6943.98 (Official Build) (x86_64)) on a Mac (Intel) running Sequoia 15.3

Lindsay Cullen

FWIW, I did authenticate with Improved Initiative, using the 'Log into Patreon' from a separate browser (Microsoft Edge, which worked with the old extension). Thanks!
