New Artwork - Small Painting - SILENT

Hi lovely peeps,

A while back I sketched a piece where the character was exploding into spikes.
I have always been fond of this drawing and the concept it works with, and always meant to make a bigger piece that follows the same lines.
But it has been an elusive one, one I can't quite seem to corner in a way I like enough to make a big painting out of.

In this old sketch, what I love most is the movement. How the position of the character makes it evident that there is movement.

What I like least is how obvious it is. I can't quite explain it, but what I love about it is also what I don't.
I know, I'm being silly. But I don't really know how else to explain it.
I love this sketch and how expressive it is, but I also don't love making emotions obvious in my work, so I think that that may be what I find uncomfortable about it and why I don't want to make it as it is into a painting. Am I making any sense at all?

And so we get onto the little painting I made based on the spike concept.
It started off as the below sketch, but that one was too......crystal like I think.

So as you can see, the final is a little less "bushy" and more geometrical.

I played with muted tones again to create a sharp contrast between the mask and the body.

You will be able to see the whole process of me painting this in this month's Process Video. ;)

I hope you'll enjoy this little piece in the meantime!
It was interesting to explore a more static version of the older sketch. I feel like this newer piece explores a more understated and still,( as in stillness) expression of the symbols of the spikes, which is also interesting.
I do like how one concept can be represented in many ways that all show a different side to an idea.
I wonder where this will lead next...:)

Thank you for reading, and I hope you are all well.
Love, M

Thank you Elizabeth! And I agree with you, the emotional impact is stronger for me with the older piece too. I think that has partially to do with the style too, as the sketch is even more dynamic because it is, well, a sketch. Whereas the polished look of a painting does smooth out some of the movement and energy. I think you've put your finger on something I had not thought of too, which is the directional quality of the spikes in the sketch. I could tell a lot was different in the painting but my brain didn't quite put words on it and what you picked up on is exactly right. Thank you! Love your analysis, it is wonderful and is definitely giving me things to think about for next time. :)

Thank you! I'm glad I explored both looks, there are things I like and don't like as much in both, which I always find fascinating. I used to intellectualise my work too much and think I could foresee how something would look accurately before I created it, but I have been proven wrong so many times. I now appreciate the added perspective that exploring a concept visually brings me and how much it can teach me about an idea I'm working on. I'm so glad you enjoy my musings ^^

I'm sure there is! I#ll need to work on the idea again at some point to see if I can merge what I like from both better :)

I absolutely adore the first sketch. It think the character does feel a little more 'distressed' than is typical in your work. However, while I felt an immediate connection with the sketch, I felt a little removed from the final work emotionally. Aesthetically & stylistically gorgeous, and I absolutely love it, but you nail that every time anyway! Emotions are so individual anyway though that I'm sure there's many who felt the opposite way. In the first sketch, I really like the strong directional quality of the spikes and the arms. I think the distress for me is most communicated by the arms, which seem to be shielding. What if they were embracing instead? Or welcoming somehow? Just brainstorming for if you do continue to explore the idea! I love your work and this is no different! I can't wait to watch the video. I love seeing how you work through different iterations of ideas. Great job

I agree with you as I try to do the same in my work, show movement without being so obvious, but I really love the concept! It does look more like crystals in the previous but it was a great job changing the shapes to more geometric shapes. I can feel the sharpness of the spikes, they remind me of the medieval architecture within dungeons or the weaponry made of stone. The change between the past to the present works has really shown a difference in story almost too. I quite like them both, really great job. I really enjoy seeing your process and reading your thought process as well, it helps me see what you see a bit more and it helps me look at my work in more detail! 😁

I love the picture you ended up with but I also really love the old sketch, I wonder if there could have been a way to incorporate the both of them.
