"Outerspace" Work in Progress

Hi everyone!

You may have noticed that, lately, I have been mentioning being frustrated with my work a few times. This is just one of those things that is on the list of common artist problems, so I am not worried, just worn down by it, and in order to gain some of my confidence back, I have decided to work on more smaller paintings, do less over-thinking (if I can...), and just go with what I feel like doing in the moment.

The above painting is the last one in my small space-themed series, which includes Wanning and Moondust (the series wasn't a planned thing, I just realised I was doing a few space related ideas lately, so I decided to call it a series, haha).

I tried out 2 versions of the same idea, one with the suit and one without, and I think I am leaning more towards the without, since I think the suit might confuse things a little. I want it to be clear that the space suit is the character's body, and I feel like adding an actual space suit might confuse things.

As always, I'd love to hear what you think though!

Anyway, this one is in the works, and doing those small paintings today really helped me feel better. I have been overthinking things a lot lately, and just painting in the way that felt nicest to work in is working out for now. Hopefully, that will keep going.

I also did a few hand studies which I'll post scan of soon for you all.

I hope you are well,
Have a wonderful week-end,

M

I love them both, but the one without the suit is more surreal (for me), because not having a space suit is, well, more surreal. I understand the overthinking ‘thing’. I’m just about embark on my first gouache piece for ages and for the first time ever, have drawn out a proper sketch beforehand and done tests of the media to make sure what I have in my head will translate. It was the only way I could stop the overthinking bit to any degree!

Hahaha, sometimes, people telling us to stop overthinking things don't understand how overthinking works I think XD It's like being told to calm down, it's valid advice, but is no help at all XD

Yes, I prefer the face f the first one too, although these were very quick little paintings, under 10 mins, just to get the idea down. Thanks for your kind words Sheilah!

Yes, indeed, it's a good way to keeps the mind stimulated and excited :) Thanks Taylor!

Sometimes it is best to do what feels right (or maybe just fun and enjoyable) in the moment when you start to feel like that; I know I get that way sometimes (*cough* a lot) ! I tend to flip between larger pieces, like one that I have that’s 2x3 feet and small watercolours that are 2x3 inches. I also agree that the first painting makes more sense, and the concept gets a bit lost with the suit included. I hope you’re enjoying the process of this one!!

The one in the suit is my fave although I like the face on the first one more. Both of them are awesome. And I hope that while your focusing on smaller pieces that it will help you feel less frustrated so you can really enjoy your work as much we do.

i definitely think the one without the suit is more interesting and in the same fuckibg boat i always over think my pieces and then they turn out to be opposite of what i wanted all my professors tell me don’t over think it just go for it and i just can’t it gets really frustrating ha
