I need your opinion : "Dust" Thumbnail Poll
Added 2019-03-16 11:00:03 +0000 UTCHello lovely people,
I am in the process of sketching out the composition for a big painting, and I would like your opinion on the thumbnails I have done so far.
I have a fairly good idea of the overall composition, but I am still undecided as to, mainly, the position of the two characters' hands.
As you can see below, I drew up a few versions that I like, but I am have trouble choosing, so I was wondering if you could let me know what you think.
The poll below only allows you to choose from one image, but you might like different things in different drawings, so do feel free to elaborate on the elements you like in the comments!
The character on the left is coloured in because I want him to look relatively "anonymous" in the final piece. He will be more or less in the dark once I paint him, with the character on the right being more in light, and intended to be the focus point.
As always, my pieces are less about the relationship between the characters in the painting, and more an attempt at representing feelings and emotions that I hope others can relate to, so the character on the left is there as a "blank slate" type of representation.
I wrote my own thoughts under each images, but don't let that sway you if you have a different opinion, I would love to hear what you all have to say!

I like this first one for the same reason I like the third one, and that is because of the ambiguity of the hand pose of the character on the right. I'm not sure if it is trying to stop the blowing, or simply saying a gentle goodbye, or reassuring the dark character...I don't know. And I love it when I don't know what I'm creating exactly, I let the feelings flow, and I often like the ambiguous ones the most.

This position is the one I am probably least leaning towards, although I do like the gentle feeling of the character cupping the other's chin, almost as if it is leaning in for a kiss, but being blown away instead. I also like the dark character's left hand, as it almost looks like it is gently touching the light character's right cheek.

This one was the last one I drew, and I really like the position of the hand of the right character, as it allows the top of the finger to be blown away, and leaves the viewer questioning whether it is a gesture of love, or an attempt at stopping the left character from blowing. I also like the hesitancy in the left character's hands, although something looks slightly awkward to me still. But maybe the awkwardness is the a good thing.
I don't like my representations to be black and white, and too straightforward, so I don't want the dark character to simply look evil or malevolent. I want there to be some doubt as to its intentions, some pity, some hesitancy...
Anyway, I am excited to paint this piece, and I look forward to hearing your opinions!
Take care everyone,
Love,
M

I really loved the hesitancy of the dark character in the third sketch! but I also think that the gentleness on the right characters hand in the first picture does give the drawing a vibe, a warmer feeling! hope this is helpful!
2019-03-20 02:16:28 +0000 UTCI chose 2 because it literally makes me feel something. Like something sad that needed to happen and thats okay. You could make the light characters thumb blow away in 2 if you wanted. I 😉
2019-03-18 23:30:48 +0000 UTCI like the right characters hands in the third image but the left characters hands in the second. I also prefer the left characters head positioning in the first, just to confuse you more🤣 . They are all great 😊
2019-03-17 17:46:57 +0000 UTCI like them all, but I pick 3 because of both character’s hand gestures in correlation with their respective facial gesture or expression. Seems like the dark character is blowing the light yet its hands are trying to get ahold of of the light char; then the light character seems like yearning yet the hand gesture may connote both yearning and gesture to avoid the dark character’s desire because of fear of losing itself (light) into dust. And of course the finger sweeping away adds a lot more into the story. Conflict, conflict, conflict is what I see so much in this sketch. I hope it wins the poll, but they’re all good🌚🌚🌚
2019-03-16 15:30:29 +0000 UTCthese are so beautiful i can’t wait to see your progress with this piece. i picked three because i thought the dynamics between two hands of the shadow figure. one seems gentle the other feels tense. but for the light figure their hands in the first one is beautiful

2019-03-16 12:31:09 +0000 UTCIt's a toss-up between 1 and 3 for me, though I really dig the detail of the finger blowing away in 3.
2019-03-16 12:16:40 +0000 UTCI like things in all 3 sketches and I'm sure you could paint all 3 as is and they would look georgeous. Personally I would chose the white person from 1or 3 with the dark hands from 2. I like the white hand from 1 a little bit more then the one from 3 but I like that the finger is blown away in 3 so I cant decide for sure ^^;
