Oh Sofie, your comment is absolutely amazing, thank you for taking the time to write all this! What you say about gouache resonates with me too, I feel like it's almost the perfect medium for me, and even though I have a longer history with watercolour, gouache really helped my art evolve. But I have been scared of it for a few months too! It is getting better also, but I do have to work at it and push myself for it to evolve in the right direction, and brave my worries. It is a tricky medium, for also very rewarding. I love this painting in real-life, scanning them and uploading them online can be so frustrating, because it never really fully expresses what the piece is! Your description is pretty much how I see it too, this strange pain, guilt, forgiveness mix, where no one is truly the bad guy or the victim, and the feelings are layered and somewhat mysterious, because we (me included) will never quite know what happened, and how each character really feels. Thank you again, I know I say it a lot, and I hope my words aren't loosing any depth from this, but you are wonderful and I am very grateful for all your support.

Hey Laura, I agree, this piece represents love for me too, in all its intricacies and shapes :) For gouache, I prefer to use cold press watercolour paper, usually 300gsm or thicker. Nice and absorbant paper works well with gouache, and a bit of a texture means the paint grips better and doesn't move as easily when reactivated. The best paper is Arches, but it is expensive, so cheaper brands are great for starting out! I have a full gouache video on my Youtube channel if you're interesting in knowing more : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AElFyz2D0JI&t=659s

Before I have even started I feel like this comment will be a bit long. Sorry about that! I actually never really discovered a medium before gouache that made total sense with me. I have never been a fan of acrylics, watercolour was better, but I never really got the hang of those either, gouache however just made sense to me the first time I tried it! Weirdly enough the last month or so it has scared the heck out of me. Slowly starting to get back into it, and I feel so happy about that. I totally understand how gouache sometimes works against you. It somehow has its own personality. I am sure this piece is so absolutely gorgeous in real life. You get to witness the different textures of watercolour and gouache that you just cannot through a screen. I am really looking forward to you giving water-soluble oils a go! I love that there is this tenderness between your two characters. I feel like the creature has accidentally badly hurt her. His hands are holding her so lightly and sort of apologetically. Almost as if their love and kindsness towards each other somehow became their downfall. They must have a special bond since she is almost kissing the creature. Even though a horn has gone straight through her she is still leaning towards him. For me it somehow represent the purest of love. A love that can sometimes be hurtful but that the love will always be there. I am not sure if that entirely made sense (hehe, so I know what you mean about ramblings), however I am sure many people get drawn into the happenings of these two. You are such an inspiration! ♥

Sofie
