Tutorial Video: Character Development

Comments

I have heard of Saitama in One-Punch Man! I haven't read the whole series, but I have seen pop-culture references to him on a few occasions. And yes, I agree. Making a character that is so powerful, he wins every fight he ever gets into can make him a pretty boring character and that ends up becoming a character flaw. But parodies of this can be quite entertaining too. And thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I haven't seen the Plinkett Reviews. I'll have to check them out!

When you mentioned how Superman's god-level strength is his biggest flaw, I was reminded of the character Saitama from One-Punch Man. His creator said, "What if the main character starts out so strong he can end any fight with one punch?" and explored it, in a very successful parody of shounen archetypes. Saitama trained specifically to be a hero so strong he could end any fight with one punch, but his strength made him bored and disillusioned with life, and in spite of his strength, he somehow remains an unknown figure for years before gaining even a little bit of acknowledgment. So even the lack of physical weaknesses can be an effective character trait, if the character is negatively affected in other ways by that unrealistic strength (or, well, if it's a comedy/parody trying to make a point). Great video, and great points made in it! Have you, by any chance, seen the Plinkett Reviews of the Star Wars prequels? They discuss and demonstrate character development a lot to highlight how utterly the prequel movies fail at being effective movies.
