Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 3- The Long Night

OMG! This was an intense episode! & We lost some of our favs.... which was NOT COOL!
But loving this season so far! & having a PURE BLAST!
MVP ARYA BABY! & even if it is an unpopular opinion the Red Woman deserves an MVP award as well bc she had a few assists!
In regards to your comment on a potential plothole concerning Bran, and his warging. Don't worry... There are tons of plotholes to be found is this episode. It breaks international records concerning plotholes.
...And YES, the showrunners didn't know what to do with Bran, so they just made it appear is if he was doing something smart, but in reality he didn't do anything at all.

I would have liked Arya to fight him if she just had to be the one who killed him. Not that weird out of nowhere sneak attack. They instantly made the Night King a chump with that

Battle plans should not make sense, both Dany and Jon have always made stupid mistakes in battle. They are very young and does not always listen (it was already spoon fed to us on the scene with Varys, Tyrion and Davos) . What will not make sense is for them to strategize excellently given their track record

Mrs. October is the first person I’ve ever heard say that they thought Tyrion and Sansa were gonna kill each other. I def took it the same way Mr. October did. They were scared for there life and thought they were about to have to defend themselves knowing they weren’t gonna survive

I wonder how many ppl you have confused by calling characters by there name that they were from a whole different show. If someone hadn’t seen the show that u refer to them from they’re gonna have no idea what ur talking about or just think that u don’t know what there name is in the show ur watching currently.

Realistically this battle made no sense last episode in the war council. Jon is telling everyone that you can’t beat the dead in a straight fight so why do the Dothraki charge another thing is why is everyone outside of Winterfell Winterfell is known for being a great fortress with high walls why wouldn’t you have your army inside of Winterfell and just have Dany and Jon burn the dead with dragon flame they could’ve gotten rid of a great chunk of the army of the dead.

Arya killing the night king made no sense because she literally hade nothing to do with the white walker subplot and the red woman telling her she would shut many eyes forever in season three was just her telling arya she could kill literally anyone also she literally failed her training with the faceless men

As far as I'm concerned, this is the end of GoT - I don't particularly care about the last 3 episodes.
I believe that Arya had to kill the Night King, because she was the only Faceless Man (Woman) around. Her whole story was a preparation for this final moment, starting with her training with Sylvio Forel, and later following Jaqen to Braavos and going through all of her training. In the end, when she left and told him "I'm Arya Stark, and I'm going home", he smirked because he knew she was no longer Arya. She was finally No One, and the Night King (who has the vision just like Jojen and Bran) couldn't see her because of that. And of course, there are all these other little moments like the Red Woman telling her about "closing blue eyes... forever" not only in this episode (which was kind of a giveaway) but also much earlier in Season 3, Bran giving her the dagger, etc, that prepared us for this.

You do realize that having a critical eye doesn’t just lead to disliking things but loving things as well? Part of the reason why the earlier seasons are so beloved is because people enjoy it so much using their critical eye, focusing on dialogue and themes and arcs and characterization. Critical isn’t a bad word.

There was NO need to adjust your brightness. The producers and the creative team of the show adjusted this specific episode. They adjusted the brightness and contrast a while back due to the backlash.

The Prince/Princess that was promised. In High Valyrian, that word doesn't have a gender. So both prince and princess that was promised played a main role in this war. Both Jon and Daenerys. Without them both, Arya would not have got a chance to even get near the Night King.
According to George R R Martin, his novel series A Song of Ice and Fire is about the army of the dead and everything happening beyond the wall (ice) and Daenerys Targaryen (fire). So I believe this episode was supposed to be the ultimate explanation of the novel title. Since the books are not yet done, and the author mentioned the books will end way different from the show, I'm still waiting to see how the author want to portray this battle of ice and fire.

There were so many crazy theories out there when GoT was airing live. One of those was that Bran and the NIght King were the same person. Ther do kind of look alike. Lots of great theories that I wish they would have incorporated into the story, but never panned out. There are a couple I really really thought would be cool, but won't mention until you're finished watching. Would be cool for everyone to share their favorite theories with you, afterwards. One of my favorite things while watching this series was going online and hearing the theories others had, so much fun to theorize!

i hear you but at the same time - if this was the final episode, everyone would know what the outcome was. obviously the living will defeat the dead. they aren't going to end the show with the army of the dead just killing everyone. the only surprise would be who kills the night king. now, with three episodes left you really don't know what's going to happen.

One thing that always stuck me as odd - they have established the Dothraki as fiercely opposed to any kind of magic or witchcraft, yet when the Red Woman magics up their swords they are all about it.

i dont agree with your theory but aside from that - the original night king was a Stark according to Old Nan. Maybe she was wrong, but he definitely wasn't a Targaryen. He was one of the first men, and the Targaryens didn't come to Westeros until much later.

This episode was great no matter the lighting, my problem with it is the night king should have been the final threat nothing else, we waited since season one to see the destroyed in 1 episode that aint even the final... Everything from here is lazy writing, but the ending or most of it is still very good just not well executed. Like how do you want to care about cercei or huron after this... poor choice

uh... the Night King is not a "show only invention" - he's in the books but as a legend. its yet to be shown if he is in the lead of the army of the dead. but if it's not him then who is it? i have always assumed it was him.

I still enjoy moments of the ending but no I largely hate it still but its been so long I dont really care anymore. I could be less critical just to enjoy the good moments sure but that doesn't make the faults in a mostly perfect show disappear. They majorly rushed the ending of this story to it's detriment, it is what it is.

I hate to harp about Theon after all that discussion in the video, but I'm sure it'll be received well enough here, so I wanna just say: (this is show only, I have similar but not identical feelings about book Theon, and he hasn't died yet so here we are) I totally get everyone's criticisms of Theon. One of the best parts of this story Martin created is one where you can empathize with villains, and critique the actions of heroes we love. Theon has done PLENTY to hate him for and to hold against him. I don't understand, however, the amount of hate and criticism he gets for jumping ship. To me, it's one of the most understandable and possibly even forgivable things he's done on the list of his bad actions. I think most people I see talking about Theon WAY overestimate the amount of heroism, nobility or righteous action they would take in his situation. Let's forget for a second the question of what good would his death in that moment have been to anyone (because let's be honest he would have died) and focus on the fact that this man is having an actual PTSD trauma response. He's watching people have body parts cut off of them and hearing their screams while being taunted and made fun of by his uncle. They say fight or flight (or fawn) for a reason. You don't get to choose which one happens. We don't judge war heroes for cowering or hiding or freaking out over fireworks - but it's easy not to because we think they've been heroic. Theon had just as little control as they do. Healing isn't linear and just because Theon had started getting better doesn't mean he wont have set backs. It's disappointing in such a high-stakes environment, but I think it's another completely human and real aspect of the story, that makes it so good and true to life. I can (hopefully) say that no one here has been held captive, beaten, violated, had their genitals cut off and skin peeled off; been starved, humiliated and conditioned, and then had his entire identity (which he already questioned) removed entirely by one maniac over a period of YEARS, like Theon has at this point in the show. I agree, though, that the backlash for him running away is what brings weight to him rushing towards the Night King, knowing it meant death. The iron islander he beat the tar out of in S6E10 even said "run away, Little Theon. It's what you do best". So I think the whole crescendo of his death is beautiful. I love his character. In a story with a girl stepping into a fire and walking out with dragons, people being brought back to life or having the ability to change faces and dead men walking, I think Theon has the wildest story and character arc, from start to finish. And, I think Tony nailed it when he said that Alfie Allen is probably the best actor in this series. I think only Charles Dance tops his performance for me; Peter Dinklage is very close.

This is an explanation I've read for the "Prince/Princess who was promised" prophecy. I've removed some stuff to keep from spoiling as well:
I've said this a few times over the past weeks but I'm going to keep defending it.
Prophecy in this world is not literal nor is it always correct. It is often misinterpreted, self fulfilling, and often plain wrong.
Jon Snow was the Prince that was Promised.
He united the army of the living against the army of the dead and organised the defence of Winterfell that ultimately saw the others defeated.
No he didn't kill the NK. But the NK was a show only invention, and there is no need for Jon to kill him to fulfill the prophecy.
Arya killed the NK. Without Jon, would she be in a position to have done so? Nope. Im not sure why you would think her training was for nothing when she more than holds her own against the dead, before sneaking past the WW to kill the NK.
To be honest, without Jons guidance when shes young, does she even venture to Braavos? Doubt it.
'Stick em with the pointy end' certainly comes back in a big way.
The prophecy does not say this dude will stick a blade in the heart of the enemy blah blah blah. It says they'll be the one to save the realm and Jon is the only person who can remotely claim that they did.
His story is literally a song of ICE (the undead, and the starks) and Fire (Danaerys, and the Targaryeans).

I remember my initial reaction to this episode was mostly disappointment simply because I thought this showdown was going to be the culmination of the show and it just ends and they move on, makes everything in the next few episodes feel way less important. It’s like the night king story was just in the way and not actually as big a deal as they built it up to be for like 10 years. I think it was a major mistake to end this story in the middle of the season totally disconnected from the kings landing story.
Christian

I think I've heard that in the books it's said that some Targs can warg into dragons, but idk if it's like you can't just warg into anything...like it seems like you have to be connected to it somehow before warging into it. Idk if that would matter for Bran but it seems like he only wargs into beings he's connected to, Hodor, Summer, the ravens. Idk 🤷♀️

Theon and Jorah had the best deaths in the show. Theon made one critical mistake in his path and it was for very human reasons. He chose his father and blood over the Starks. And that decision came from a very human desperation to truly belong and have a place in the world. As kind as the Starks were to him, as much as he loved them, even Robb repeatedly reminded him that Stark was "not your House." So he wrestled with where his loyalty lay and ultimately, even by his own admission, he chose wrong. He knew that even in Winterfell where he admitted he'd come too far down this wrong path to pretend to be anyone else. And then had his whole self physically and psychologically torn away from him over months of the cruelest degradation and torture. And from there, his choices weren't his own for a lot of it. He was all trauma and PTSD and desperate grabs for his old self. I think him saving his sister and returning to fight for Winterfell and the Starks and Sansa, fully redeemed him. And he died a very noble death. Theon is my second favorite character in the whole show (after Sansa) and I found his whole story over the series to be really impactful. And Alfie Allen just acted the hell out of that role. I think Theon was the most fully realized character. Some of the characters had really dramatic arcs and changes over the series (Bran, Jamie, Arya, Dany) and I think Theon's felt the most real. His motivations and intentions were so consistent and driven by the same core factors of his character. He was so thoroughly believable. He's probably one of my favorite characters of all time.

I do think Theon redeemed himself, but I don't know who's suggesting that because he has you can't say anything bad about him. I get the angle that he couldn't rescue his sister in the moment and is why he dipped, I believe I even brought up that angle in a comment. HOWEVER, it's not the angle that I would expect an honorable person to take. At that time Theon was NOT honorable, nor reliable, nor "good", ect and I think it's great to point out the bad in ANY character including him regardless if the character redeems themselves or not.

Thats a great question, i never thought about that. The last dragon died years before the previous 3 eyed raven was around so he couldnt test that theory either. It's a little off topic but you might find it interesting that in the books you get to read from the perspective of a warg in the wildling army. He was a really talented warg and at one point he tries to take the body of an intelligent woman and he gets very close but fails. Had he tried it on Hodor I think it would have worked for him! Just worth mentioning Brans not unique perse he's just extremely talented/strong for his age.

"Does that mean she has his face now" LOL I don't think Bran can worg into dragons. Remember when his crew were shocked that he worged into Hodor and he actually ended up causes Hodor to have a seizure. I think they had mentioned that they were shocked because the human mind is to intelligent to be worged into? I think they mentioned earlier in the show that dragons were considered highly intelligent. Some even suspect they were more intelligent than humans. I'm not certain on this, maybe some others can correct me if I'm wrong. I'm a huge fan of the show, but I admit I haven't read the books nor gotten into the history and lore, so I'm just going based on my faulty memory.

I mean a lot of characters shoulda died this episode that didn't, fine whatever, but at one point they had Sam fighting while laying down??? 😭 keeping him off camera woulda been better than THAT. While its my opinion that this show was far lost by this point I'm genuinely glad you guys are enjoying it! I think the reasons why yall can appreciate it for what it is is because you didn't have several years to stew in the plot. If you had years to rewatch the show, nurse your own theories and had to wait a week between episodes yall would notice a whole lot more problems than you currently do but thats not the case and that might be a good thing! If you're happy about the Night Kings end then I'm happy for yall.

Jamie and Brienne fighting side by side with two parts of Ned’s sword. Ice once again defending Winterfell.
The prophecy is the Prince/Princess that was promised will bring the Dawn.
The dagger Arya used is called the Catspaw dagger. In the scene where Sam is looking at a book in the Citadel you see it on the page.
They love to callback to Season 1. Someone tried to kill Bran with the dagger which led to Cat taking Tyrion hostage and Jamie attacking Ned. It started things in motion. Bran gave the dagger to Arya on the same spot in the Godswood that she killed the Night King at. Arya training blind and learning all of her Ninja techniques saved all of humanity. It gives a little more meaning to the smirk Jaq’n Hagar had on his face when she left. Maybe he knew.
Hiding in the crypts is not safe when your enemy can raise the dead.
Many people wish the series stopped here.
A tip so you don’t get roasted when you start HOTD. The title is House of the Dragon. A lot of people get into a tizzy when it’s called anything else when your reacting to that show. It’s not House of Dragons or House of the Dragons. Strange pet peeve for some.

This is tv masterpiece, i understand that there might be something to criticize about decisions made by the characters but we have to remember that they are inexperienced and stubborn. Arya killing the night king was WELL DESERVED! She’s been training her whole life, honing her skills and this entire episode she was amazing but being the one to kill the night king with all she has learned.... was chefs kiss!
