Arrival (2016) Reaction

We do have the potential to see the future in our mind's eye

oceanoflight

The realization of it being their future is so sad.... what a good movie.

Aliens, in some form, have to be real. The galaxy is simply too big for us to be the only sentient beings.

Gryxr

Fucked if I know but what I think is the universe is massive how can it just be us?close minded but open to ideas how can it just be us I don't think we are the centre and there is more to it? To think otherwise is either ignorance stupidity or denial through fear that it's not all about us and we don't control everything who knows but I believe there must be more I refuse to think humans are the only focus of the universe considering how combustible and fragile we are who knows what it is🤔

Brycey

Well, Brony, you've had your minds expanded with "Arrival" and "Interstellar". Feel like tackling "Inception"? It's a real brain-bender.

Jim Schmitz

Regarding the bird, I think it's there for the same reason coal miners used to bring a canary with them; hence the phrase "canary in the coal mine" is meant to indicate that there is a warning of danger. In the mines, they used vocal birds like canarys to warn them of toxic gases or lack of oxygen while working in the mines. Since these birds constantly made noise, if you heard hat noise stop, it was a warning to evacuate the mine because something int he air killed it.

The aliens didn't communicate through time and the leader of China could not read the alien language and could not see the future like Amy Adams could. The aliens weren't communicating through time, but they see all time at once, non linear, circular. All at once. That's why their language is circular and reads in every direction. As Amy Adams learned the language, she too was able to start seeing time as non-linear. She used that ability to see the future, a future where she knew the language really well which enabled her to know the language just as well in the past. She also used it to see her future daughter, her husband, her daughters death, and to get the Chinese leader's phone number. She is the only one who is able to do it. Years later, when she explains it to Jeremy Renner and tells him what happens to their daughter (who is now born), he freaks and leaves her and he can't look at his daughter the same way anymore because he knows she's going to die. It's fucking brutal.

Chase Schleich

Kangaroo was a lie :) You spoke when she explained that to Ian. I believe she had a choice and she says that in the end, that she wanted to bring that personality to life, even knowing how it ends. I guess also to feel it in reality and not only as a memory of the future. Some think it is worth it, some feel it is not fair towards the girl who had to die so young. I don't have a strong opinion, can see both sides. But maybe leaning more into agreeing with Louise. Although, the ending would have been very tough with what we saw (cancer or not). Sound in this movie is what makes it the most for me. Eerie "music", heptapod whale like sounds and also future glimpses breaching into current reality with sound of girl asking questions, turning book pages.

Im not sure why none of the vimeo videos are loading for me, is anyone else having the issue?

Alex

I can't say if I believe or not, as the evidence is not adequate to support belief. I can accept the possibility, but everything up to now is the province of imagination.

Jim Schmitz

Consider this possibility, the aliens were never there. They were just some sort of projection, and the fact that they just vanished into dust rather than flew away has to make you consider it. Kind of reminds me of Contact, another sci fi flick that makes you think about how there may be a way to bridge space. Consider that most of what we know about the cosmos was learned in the last 100 years or so, and today we know things that weren't even imagined until very recently. Humanity's' problem, I think anyway, is that we are accumulating new knowledge so fast that we are having are hard time processing it. Just a thought or two...

Peter K

Couldn't have it better myself.

Back in the old days coal miners used to bring a canary "bird" in a cage down in to the coal mines with them and that was to make sure the air was breathable and not toxic because if it was toxic the canary would die letting the miners know to get out quickly. also Abbot and Costello was a very old comedic duo, one was short and fat and the other tall and skinny, but in their comedy there was always some sort of misunderstanding that would have to be figured out. Its a great movie and yes I do believe there is other life out there, Im in to amateur astronomy and I have spotted some things that i cant explain.

Ron Silva

This guy is an insane director, I had already thought so but Dune 2 really sealed the deal for me, that movie is incredible. Arrival, Prisoners, Sicario, Blade Runner 2049, dude doesn't miss.

Kenneth thomas

Definitly believe there’s something out there like no way where the only ones out here in the universe

Vincent

And on the question of would you live your life differently if you knew what was gna happen? Well thats a high concept in that does knowing mean you can change it or is it all predetermined and if you attempt to change it, what was the future you perceived then? Was that an illusion?

Jonny

I do believe life exists out there. But not in a way we understand. In the same way I as a Christian believe in God and angels and other supernatural beings, these beings are alive but not in the sense we are alive. Hope I'm making sense.

Jonny

i mean, mathematically, aliens have to exist, and i think that’s the page most people are on. the important questions are: 1. are they sentient like us? and 2. would they ever interact with us? and i think the answer to both is 99% no. i’ve always felt like human consciousness was a freak accident. if we look at any other animal, we’re clearly different. animals are part of an ecosystem, part of nature, and human consciousness drives us to become separate from, and attempt to conquer, nature. it’s paradoxical, and seemingly non-beneficial for our long term survival. not to get too pessimistic, but it seems like a misstep in evolution that spiraled out of control, to me. all this to say: i doubt our level of sentience is abundant. it seems too far away from natural progression. and even if there are other civilizations with our level of sentience, the next question is; would they ever interact with us. i think this is also a no. from everything we know about science and physics, which is almost certainly not a full understanding, but is all we have to go off of, no form of matter can exceed the speed of light. method of travel is irrelevant; if something has mass, it cannot reach that velocity. so in order to reach Earth, they would have to travel for hundreds, or thousands, of years, and there’s just no reason good enough to make that journey worth it. if they needed resources, it would be easier to get them from any of the innumerable other uninhabited planets. if they needed slaves, they’d surely be able to create robots if they have the technology for near light-speed travel. the only reason i can fathom that would justify a thousand year long, multi-generational journey through space, is that their planet is dying and they need a new one, like in Interstellar. if we were ever contacted by aliens, i think it most likely be through some kind of radio system. we would share information and history and art. just learn more about the universe to understand it better. how cool would that be, if we could contact another civilization and learn about them firsthand? we could learn about their histories, religions, myths, customs, art, etc. the questions it would raise about life, self, the universe, existence, divinity, and human nature would be incomprehensible.

Patrick Swansborough

It would've been so much easier if they didn't use English (few languages standing on top of each other in a trench coat, pretending to be one language... + it was never codified on top of that). It's too ambiguous, but also very effective on the other hand.

Michal Kubán

I'm glad y'all grasped the concept towards the end. It's definitely a 2 or 3 time watcher to catch everything. All the flash forwards and such. This is in my top 5 for sci-fi films.

sOMbr

If aliens are real, then why do they travel millions of light years in space and the first thing they want to do when they get here is get up in some rednecks ass with a flashlight?? Just kidding. I've seen things and totally believe they exist.

DarrellWaller

Oooh! You guys are gonna love this one!!!! It’s super cool and very emotional.

Jean Choi

Really looking forward to being able to watch this later! Fun fact: This director also directed Dune ;) I think I already suggested it, but since you like this and you really liked Interstellar, I highly recommend watching Contact. It is a sci-fi film and was directed by Robert Zemeckis, who also directed Forrest Gump. It stars Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey. It came out in 96 I think, about 2 years after Gump. It's amazing.

Jared M

OMG LFG! 🙌🏽
